Blast resistance in rice cvs. Sasanishiki and Hitomebore, and their near-isogenic lines (NILs) was evaluated in the experimental paddy field under the severe blast epidemic in 2001. Based on the number and type of leaf blast lesions formed on the NILs, races 007.0 and 037.1 of Pyricularia grisea were presumed to be distributed in the field. Only R-or HR-type lesions were formed on the leaves of the NILs with the complete resistance genes to the local races. On the other hand, panicle blast severity was found to differ between Sasanishiki and Hitomebore NILs. The result suggests that among these NILs of which the genotype can confer complete resistance to the races, different levels of resistance to panicle blast can be observed in the paddy fields under severe blast epidemics.
