The reactivity of mono-functional epoxy resins containing polytetrahydrofuran chain (PTHF-Ep) with 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (2E4MZ) and 2,4-diamidino-6-[2-(2-methyl-1-imidazolyl)ethyl]-1,3,5-triazine (2MZA) as an initiator was examined with the aim of expanding their use in semiconductor package encapsulant applications. The reactivity in the copolymerization of PTHF-Ep and glycidyl phenyl ether (GPE) was evaluated with respect to the type of imidazole used as the initiator. Ring-opening polymerization of the epoxy group in PTHF-Ep proceeded with both types of imidazole, but the extent of molecular weight increase varied with the imidazole type. The reaction of PTHF-Ep with 2MZA yielded a greater amount of high-molecular-weight components over time compared to the reaction with 2E4MZ. In the copolymerization of PTHF-Ep and GPE, the reaction with 2E4MZ exhibited rapid consumption of GPE followed by a slower reaction of PTHF-Ep, whereas the reaction with 2MZA showed nearly simultaneous consumption of both epoxy components.
