In the wild, female bonobos (Pan paniscus) are known to be more gregarious and socially active compared to female chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). In order to explain these kinds of different levels of sociality between bonobos and chimpanzees, many ecological differences, such as fruit abundance or sexual receptibility, have been discussed. Comparative study of bonobos and chimpanzees in the same captive facility can provide helpful insights into interpreting the differences between two Pan species in the wild.
Focal sampling methods for captive Pan species in Zoo Leipzig, Germany, were used for comparing female sociality. Preliminary result showed that female chimpanzees are spending more time in social activity compared to female bonobos, under captive condition. The next issue to address is the context and content of the two Pan species sociality.
