Absorption and transport of dietary oleic acid were studied in carp of summer season, treated with dorsal aorta cannulation, after force-feeding with [1-14C] oleic acid dissolved in carp body lipids. The blood plasma was collected at various intervals after feeding, and distribution of radioactivities in plasma lipid classes, lipoprotein fractions separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and high performance gel-filtration chromatography (HPGC), and lipid classes of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), and others fractions separated by HPGC were investigated. Radioactivity was mainly detected as free fatty acids (FFA) and partial glycerides in HDL fraction at the initial 3h after administration of labelled fatty acid. In addition, high activity was detected also in others fraction at 3h. At 6, 9 and 12h, radioactivity was located essentially in triglycerides (TG) associated mainly with HDL fraction, followed in order by LDL and VLDL fractions. However, radioactivities in VLDL and LDL fractions were disappeared and the activity was almost detected in HDL fraction at 48 and 72h after dosing.
It was recognized from these results that a small part of dietary fatty acids were direly released as FFA associated with HDL into the circulatory system; however, they were mainly synthesized to TG and secreted in the form of HDL, followed in order by LDL and VLDL.
