The most of characteristics of Bacillus B2 are very similar to those of Bacillus B1 investigated previously. However, Bacillus B1 and B2 are distinguished principally by the facts that the latter does not require mevalonic acid, but requires essentially ascorbic acid and biotin (under existence of Tween 80), and produces ethanol from fructose, and is sensitive to dehydroacetic acid. It is suggested that Bacillus B2 produces mevalonic acid through assimilation of CO_2,because Bacillus B2 does not require mevalonic acid and requires essentially biotin, and that Bacillus B1 and B2 differs in phosphorous metabolism conjugated with glycolysis, since Bacillus B2 produces ethanol from fructose, and is sensitive to dehydroacetic acid. It is considered that the requirement toward mevalonic acid for Lactobacillus can not be applied as the taxonomical factor toward Lactobacillus. Bacillus B1 has lost the requirement toward mevalonic acid after treatment with antifungal substances. Bacillus B2 has lost the requirement toward peptides after treatment with antifungal substances. It is proposed that Bacillus B2 is a variety of Bacillus B1.
