The use of self-assembly of nanosegregated liquid crystals is a promising approach to the formation of ion-transport pathways. Up to now, polar liquid crystals containing oligoethylene oxide chains and cyclic carbonate moiety have been designed for lithium ion transport. Herein, we report a new class of lithium ion conductive liquid crystals based on dioxane moiety. This design strategy has led to higher ionic conductivity than that of analogous cyclic carbonate-based liquid crystal.

Random copolymers with azobenzene and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) side chains were synthesized. The liquid crystalline structure of the random copolymers was analyzed by X-ray scattering measurement in a bulk state. The copolymers exhibited the first order peak at 5.7 nm with several higher order peaks at regular intervals, indicating that the copolymers formed a highly ordered smectic lamellar structure. The azobenzene homopolymer adopts the smectic phase with ca. 3 nm of the smectic lamellar spacing, and the POSS homopolymer exhibits an amorphous phase. The copolymers exhibited high smectic lamellar ordering with large spacing. We presume that the unexpectedly highly ordered lamellar structure of the copolymers is formed by nano-segregation between the azobenzene smectic layers and POSS layers.

Tris(chelate) metal complexes are interesting structural motifs due to the propeller-shaped chirality called Δ, Λ isomerism. Although several pioneering works have been performed for racemic tris(chelate) metallomesogens, the effect of Δ, Λ chirality on the molecular arrangement and liquid crystal properties remains unclear. Here we report two types of tris(chelate) ruthenium complexes, which were optically resolved into Δ, Λ isomers with HPLC. In the polarized microscope observation, racemic and enantiomeric complexes were found to exhibit different textures attributed to different mesophase formation.

Gold complexes have attracted interest because they show strong photoluminescence in condensed phases based on aurophilic interaction. Since the photoluminescence behavior of gold complexes depends on their aggregated structure, the behavior can be tuned by controlling the aggregated structure. Recently, we have developed rod-like gold complexes with liquid-crystalline property and succeeded in tuning their photoluminescence behavior by phase transition. In this work, we focused on unique properties of the fluorine atom and synthesized gold complexes with fluorine substituents to control the properties of gold complexes. We observed their liquid-crystalline and photoluminescence behavior, and discussed the relationship between the properties and aggregatedstructures.

We synthesized a polypropyleneimime dendrimer having peripheral cinnamate unit through ortho-linked benzoate group (D2-6oCC2). Polarizing optical microgram (POM) image of mixture of D2-6oCC2 and nematic liquid crystal (1/99, wt/wt) did not exhibit homeotropic alignment differing from the other dendrimers we have reported. After linearly polarized UV light (LPUV) was irradiated, the mixture showed slightly dark field under crossed polarizers. When rotating the sample by 45°, the image became brighter. This result indicates D2-6oCC2 has potential to be an alignment agent for homogeneous orientation.

One-electron reduction of viologens, which are typical electrochromic molecules, proceed by irradiation with UV light. In this study, liquid-crystalline (LC) viologens having dodecyl group and bulky counter anions were synthesized and their photoreaction was explored. The DMF solution of the viologens changed from colorless to blue upon UV irradiation. In the films, the one-electron reduction reaction was confirmed at above 80℃, which is temperature range of LC.

Silica nanoparticles attract a lot of interest due to their narrow particle size distribution and high heat-resistance. An orientation of liquid crystalline molecules can be controlled by an electric field. Consequently, agglomeration structures of the silica nanoparticles are expected to be controlled by coating liquid crystals on the particles. The purpose of this study is to synthesize the organic-inorganic hybrid materials which are the silica nanoparticles coated with liquid crystals, and to investigate of the phase transition behavior of the surface modified silica nanoparticles.

Photoluminescent (PL) properties of organic materials have received much attention for various applications such as chemical sensors, mechanical sensors and light-emitting diodes. We have recently reported photoalignable materials containing N-benzylideneaniline (NBA) derivatives are easily formed using non-photoriactive polymers and monomeric materials. In this study, we succeed in in-situ fabrication of photoluminescence liquid crystalline polymer films from polymethacrylate with 4-oxyohenylaldehyde side groups and fluorene derivatives. Optical features of the film are investigated in detail.

A novel liquid-crystalline dimer with an asymmetric structure was synthesized. Furthermore, aliquid-crystalline polymer was obtained by using the liquid-crystalline dimer. The liquid-crystalline dimer,having cholesteryl and azobenzene mesogenic groups, is a chiral reactive compound having an epoxy terminalgroup. The liquid-crystalline dimer exhibited TGBA and cholesteric mesophases on heating and coolingprocesses. On the cooling process, an ordered liquid-crystalline phase such as a smectic F phase was formed. Theliquid-crystalline polymer was obtained by the reaction of polyethyleneimine and the epoxy containingliquid-crystalline dimer. The liquid-crystalline polymer showed glass transition and mesophase-isotropic phasetransition temperatures. The thin film of the liquid-crystalline polymer acted as an alignment agent forlow-molecular-weight liquid crystals

Photoalignment of low-molecular-liquid crystals (LC) cell is explored without surface treatment ofthe LC-cell. We have synthesized π-conjugated wedge-shaped molecules based on 5,5'-diphenyl-2,2'-bithiophene containing a tri(decyloxy)benzoate moiety and the fluorosubstituted analogues. Some of compounds exhibit bicontinuous cubic liquid-crystalline (LC) phases with an Ia3d symmetry. Time-of-flight photoconductivity measurements reveal that these LC compounds show ambipolar charge carrier mobilities on the order of 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1.

Recently hydrogels have become important materials in soft matter research field. In this work, we synthesized a novel monomer with enhanced hydrophilicity. The mesomorphic properties were evaluated after mixing with a thermotropic reactive mesogen that had a nematic phase. Our work aims to make a cholesteric structure that can swell in water, which is a non-toxic and abundantly available solvent.

The viscosity of certain fluids can be reversibly changed by an applied electric field. This kind of fluid is called an ER fluid. A liquid crystal is known as one of the typical ER fluids. The molecular long axis is arranged perpendicular to the shearing direction by an electric field, as a consequence, the viscosity increases. However, the turn-off process is governed by only the shearing. As a result, the response time of this process is still long. To improve the response time, dual frequency liquid crystals (DFLCs) were used in this study. It is possible to align the DFLC molecules along or perpendicularly to the electric field direction by varying the AC frequency. In this study, the relationship between the dielectric characteristic and the ER effect has been discussed.

The bistable LCD with a grid structure of polymer fibers in the cell has been proposed. Fibers consisted of the hydroxypropyl cellulose were spun by electrospinning method. In this report, the influence of LC orientation states and the electro-optical characteristic of the cell which was injected the nematic LCs with ⊿ε were investigated. As a result, the dependence of the LC alignment state on the gap between fibers was observed, however, it seemed that fibers assembled in the cell were not affected to the static and transient response characteristics in this experimental region.

The poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly (4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) have electrical conductivity and flexibility, and is expected to supersede the ITO electrode. We have been developing a low-cost display using rubbed PEDOT/PSS films. In this study, we report about basic characteristics of Liquid Crystal (LC) alignment on the PEDOT/PSS film. Here, sample LC cells of homogeneous mode with the rubbed PEDOT/PSS electrode were fabricated, then, the LC alignment parallel to the rubbing directions was observed. However, transmittance vs. applied voltage characteristics was shifted approx. +1 V, and the degradation of electrical resistance was observed. From this result, the PEDOT/PSS has a possibility to affect the damage to the LC materials.

Reverse TN (RTN)-LCDs can realize the driving by low electric voltage. However, RTN-LCDs changes into splay twist structure without applied electric voltage. Conventional stabilization by photo curable LC monomer addition and homogeneous UV light exposure increases the driving voltage. We have reported that the wall structure formation surrounding RTN structure is effective to stabilize it, although the stabilization mechanism has not been clarified yet. By analyzing the UV light exposure distributions using the different kinds of photomasks quantitatively, it was found that to stabilize RTN structure the UV light exposure distribution pattern is important.

Microwave and millimeter-wave devices including a liquid crystal (LC) layer are increasingly attractive for the use in adaptive and controllable devices. Various types of microwave phase shifters having an LC transmission line have been studied (e.g. microstripline, coplanar waveguide, and rectangular waveguide). In conventional microwave devices, the response time after the removal of voltage is slow because the LC layer in the devices is usually thick. In this study, the time response of the LC permittivity is studied experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally measured response curves having two time constants for decay are examined by using Frank's continuum theory with and without the backflow effect.

THz wave is electromagnetic wave which is ranging from 0.1 to 10 THz. Recently, THz wave is expected for application of broadband communication, nondestructive inspection, security check, and so on. THz phase-control device becomes important for the next THz wave application. Liquid crystal is known as a high birefringence material in THz frequency range and it can have a potential application to THz phase control device. In the study, we fabricate the reflection type liquid crystal device for THz phase-control to reduce the cell thickness. Fundamental operation properties of the device are evaluated by using optically pumped gas laser.

With recent increased interest in health and environmental issues, many researchers started to develop biosensors for detection of illnesses as well as toxic substances. To develop these sensors, we utilized the unique properties of selective reflection in chiral nematic liquid crystals (CNLCs). Thus far, we have demonstrated that CNLCs, upon contact with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), develop a change in color in red or blue direction (red or blue shift). This color change is attributable to the change in the chiral pitch of CNLCs. The latter is suggested to be influenced by molecular interactions between CNLCs and VOCs, such as hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and LC ordering parameters. Among the CNLCs evaluated, we found that phenylpyrimidine (PPy) derivatives showed the largest blue shift in selective reflection spectrum upon contact with VOCs. We discovered that the large color shift is caused by low LC ordering as PPy derivatives has a low nematic-isotropic transition temperature.

Cholesteric liquid crystalline (CLC) phases, which have helical superstructures, work as one-dimensional photonic crystals when the helical pitches are comparable to visible wavelengths. We have successfully fabricated water-in-oil-in-water double emulsions with CLC materials as the shell phase (CLC microcapsules). When a laser dye is dissolved in the core region, CLC microcapsules work as omnidirectional distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) resonators due to radial arrangement of their helical axes. The light-confinement effect at the center of the CLC microcapsule is different from that in the other region. We drained water in the core by using osmotic pressure to concentrate the dye at the center and studied the effect of the core size on the DBR laser action of the CLC microcapsules.

The photorefractive properties of photoconductive polymer stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal was measured. The mixtures composed of the photoconductor, chiral dopants, liquid crystals and photoinitiator exhibit asymmetric energy exchange in two beam coupling experiment. Liquid-crystal (LC) micro-lens-array (MLA) with 3rd electrode was fabricated to realize a variable light diffusion device. We found that the light diffusion effect was increased with the anti-phase voltages to drive the LC-MLA. Optical haze value changed between 10 and 80 % with driving condition of the LC-MLA. From the result of angle-dependence of LED lamp luminance though the LC-MLA, it is clear that driving the LC-MLA by the anti-phase voltages is suitable to increase the light diffusion effect.

Polymer/cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) composites prepared by in-situ polymerization of a ChLC and a photo-curable LC monomer enable polarization-independent phase modulation with fast response times below 1 ms. One of the problems that needs to be solved for the commercialization of these materials is the high threshold voltage; however, the improvement achieved through the optimization of the monomer concentration, the polymerization temperature and the host LC is insufficient. Here, we propose a new fabrication process in which the chiral LC in the polymer network is replaced by an achiral LC after the polymer network is formed. This new fabrication method is found to yield a lower threshold voltage and larger refractive index tuning range.

Dye-doped liquid crystals (LCs) exhibit significantly enhanced photoinduced reorientationcompared to undoped LCs. Although the reorientation behavior has been interpreted as a phenomenonbased on interaction between the dye molecules and the electric field of light, the effect of themolecular structure on the photoinduced reorientation and details of the reorientational mechanism arenot clear. Recently, we reported that several coumarin derivatives with long molecular length functionas efficient triggers for photoinduced reorientation of LCs. We prepared interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) films containing azotolane as photochromic mesogens and D4ST (stilbene derivative) as two-photon chromophores. The IPN films showed macroscopic bending upon irradiation with visible-light laser pulses. Additionally, we investigated the energy transfer from D4ST to azotolane after two-photon excitation in solution. Upon irradiation with visible-light laser pulses, D4ST showed fluorescence, which was quenched by azotolane. Furthermore, azotolane in the D4ST solution showed the change in absorption spectra due to isomerization by irradiation with visible-light laser pulses. These results indicate that macroscopic deformation of the IPN films occurs by the energy transfer from D4ST to azotolane and subsequent trans-cis isomerization of azotolane.

A liquid crystal (LC) lens with highly-resistive films is realized by preparing a poly (3,4 - ethylene dioxythiophene) / polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT/PSS) and resin. The sheet-resistivity of the PEDOT / PSS was about 10^7Ω/□. The interference fringe images of the LC lens can be observed by a polarizing microscope under cross polarizers. The optical phase profile of the convex and concave lens properties can be derived by measuring the interference fringes. The almost parabolic distribution of the phase profile can be attained by applying voltages to two electrodes of the LC lens.

We generate toroidal droplets of aqueous Sunset Yellow FCF (SSY) solutions and observe a spontaneously twisted ground state. By carrying out twist angle measurements along the Z direction of our toroidal droplets, we find that the total twist angle remains essentially π for all aspect ratios, agreeing with theoretical expectations. We also find the values of the splay, twist, bend, and saddle splay elastic constants by fitting our data to a theoretical curve.

We investigated an effect of a fluorescent dye, Rhodamine 6G, on cholesteric (Ch) LC droplets on a glass substrate when they are coexisting with the isotropic phase. Depending on the dye concentration, the Ch droplets often change the direction of helical axis with respect to the substrate plane, which, we suppose, should be ascribed to the anchoring condition. In this study, we focused on the contact angle of the Ch droplets on various substrates and measured its dependence on the dye concentration.

Colloidal dynamics in nematic liquid crystals is growing attention in recent years. Here we study the behavior of colloidal dimers which are induced by electric fields. Depending on the initial configuration of two particles, the director field around the dimers shows distinctive appearance under a cross-polarized condition. In particular, we find a new type of AC electrophoretic behavior which enables the motion perpendicular to the rubbing direction.

The formation of micelles generally changes according to the concentration of surfactant molecules and temperature, and in particular rod or disk like micelles can cause lyotropic nematic phases. In this paper, we found that there are two different nematic phases caused by rod and disk like micelles in lyotropic liquid crystals by measurement of flow birefringence and investigated the phase transition between those two nematic phases by using differential scanning calorimetry.

As a model of biomembranes, we made a phospholipid-cholesterol Langmuir film in which cholesteric LC domains with several ~ several-tens of micrometer diameter were dispersed. When an ethanol vapor was transmitted through the film, due to the cross correlation between transmembrane mass transport and the director field, the embedded cholesteric domains exhibited a unidirectional director rotation, the speed of which linearly depended on the chirality strength. The obtained system offers a good prototype of pseudo-biomembranes.

By mixing an ionic impurity into a nematic liquid crystal, we recently found a system which enables large-scale self-organization of a two-dimentional square array of umbilical defects without requirement of pre-patterned surfaces. Here, we focus on the stabilization of the grid-like pattern in a local region by a photo-polymerization method. It is found that the boundary of the cured region helps smoothly connect the non-polymerized defects induced by an electric field.

Cholesteric blue phase I is a chiral liquid crystal phase having a body-centered cubic lattice with period of several hundred nanometers, and generally shows a colorful platelet texture composed of polycrystal-like structure with different lattice orientations. In this study, lattice orientation dependence of electro-optical properties in polymer-stabilized blue phase (PSBP) was investigated by combination of confocal laser scanning microscopy and microscopic electro-optical measurement system. A relationship between the lattice orientation of PSBP and the electro-optical properties was observed.

The mesophases of BAPU-n were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Additionally, these bent-core compounds were added to 1,2-bis(4'-n-alkoxybenzoyl)hydrazines (BABH-n) to modify the stability of cubic phase derived from BABH-n. The characterization by DSC, POM and XRD showed that BAPU-n is not compatible with BABH-n. On the other hand, it was found that the addition of BNPO-9 to BABH-9 reduces stability of the cubic phase.

The binary systems of mono-disperse hard-rod-like particles with different diameters have been predicted to segregate into smectic phases by the numerical experiments and computer simulations. This segregation is entropically driven based on the steric repulsion between particles. In this study, we present an experimental finding of the predicted segregation by atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations and synchrotron radiation small- and wide- angle X-ray scattering measurements (SR-SAXS and SR-WAXS) in the thermotropic LC systems of the binary mixtures of the polysilanes with different alkyl side chain length, Poly{n-tridecyl-(S)-2-methylbutylsilane}, Poly{n-dodecyl-(S)-2-methylbutylsilane}, Poly{n-undecyl-(S)-2-methylbutylsilane} and Poly{n-decyl-(S)-2-methylbutylsilane}, which can be regarded as rods with different diameters.

Liquid crystal micro-particles are functional materials possessing attractive properties such as optical and dielectric anisotropies, and are fabricated by polymerizing pre-aligned molecules in the liquid crystalline state. Here we demonstrate orientation control of liquid crystal micro-particles in a dual-frequency liquid crystal host by applying electric field with different frequencies. Rectangular-shaped micro-particles with inner molecular alignment along the long axis were fabricated via two-photon excited direct laser writing, and driven by an electric field applied in the in-plane direction of the cell. Constructed theoretical model considering three-dimensional director distribution of the host around the particle provides insight into the unique behavior of the liquid crystal-liquid crystal particle composites.

The anchoring effect, which immobilizes liquid crystal director near the interface between solid and liquid crystal, restricts a realignment of director by application of an external field. In this study, liquid crystal cells within which the inner surfaces were coated with a polymer exhibiting weak anchoring interaction to a nematic liquid crystal contacting with the polymer were prepared by two different methods. In these methods, thin isotropic liquid layers were expected to be spontaneously formed between liquid crystal and the polymer surfaces, resulting in weak anchoring. The nematic directors in both liquid crystal cells were reoriented in the direction of the static magnetic field of only 62 mT.

We successfully fabricated liquid crystalline (LC) shells showing a crystalline phase or high viscosity at the room temperature by using a glass microcapillary system. The specific additive solution enables high viscosity and crystalline LC materials to flow without temperature control, and it can quickly diffuse to the outer phase at the moment of encapsulation, and then, the isotopic (Iso)-to-LC phase transition and the stabilization of core-shell structure occur. After the encapsulation the director fields in the LC shell can be aligned, indicating that the additive solution is removed from the shell phase completely. In particular, we have successfully fabricated chiral smectic C shells for the first time; they exhibited focal conic flower textures and stripes corresponding to the helical superstructure.

Polymorphic crystallization and crystal-to-crystal thermal phase transition of non-peripherally substituted octahexyl phthalocyanine (C6PcH2) have been investigated. Two types of single crystals, α and β types C6PcH2, were separately grown by controlling the recrystallization conditions, moreover, the structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. The crystal-to-crystal thermal phase transition from α type to β type C6PcH2 was observed by the differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray structure analysis. The mechanism of the selective crystal growth has been discussed by taking the randomness of the alkyl substituted into consideration.

The control of molecular alignment of an organic semiconductor is expected to improve the device performance of organic TFTs. We have used a gate insulating films with a molecular alignment capability to improve the device performance, in which several kinds of photo-sensitive gate insulating films having different molecular alignment capabilities are studied. Two methods of spin-coating and vacuum-evaporation methods are used to deposit an organic semiconductor film on the gate insulating film. From X-ray measurements, we prove that increasing molecular alignment capability is most important for getting a well-oriented organic film in a spin-coating method, but it is of secondary importance for a vacuum evaporated film.

Novel nickel phthalocynaine complexes bearing siloxane moieties were synthesized and their mesomorphic properties and their carrier transport properties were investigated. These compounds showed columnar mesophases over a wide range of temperature including room temperature through nanosegregation between π-conjugated cores and oligosiloxane moieties. Most of the compounds exhibit higher phase transition temperatures to the isotropic phase than that of alkylated compound 1. Moreover, the compounds that show a hexagonal columnar phase form homeotropic alignment in sandwich cells consisting of two ITO electrodes. Therefore, carrier transport property of some compounds could be evaluated by a Time-of-Flight method which revealed that they exhibited ambipolar carrier transport properties in columnar mesophases.

In the nematic phase of 8CB (4-n-octyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl) under the shear flow, it has been suggested that in the temperature region of α2/α3 < 0, a flow instability occurs: the flow alignment of the director changes to a tumbling motion of the director about the neutral axis. If the transient response of the dielectric permittivity is measured in the tumbling region, damped oscillation of the director has been identified. In our present study, if the shear flow is inverted at a time t0 after the initiation of the flow, we could find that some echo of the tumbling motion can be observed in the dielectric measurements. The amplitude of the echo becomes weak when the temperature is decreased to N-SA phase transition point. These phenomena are discussed on the basis of the critical behavior of the director motion.

Liquid crystal is an intermediate material between crystal and liquid forming the rod-like or disk-shaped organic molecules, and has interesting properties, the molecular orientation as crystal and the fluidity as liquid. A mechanism of the formation of the liquid crystal phase is known that the molecular interactions and molecular structures are closely related, but the details of the mechanism are not understood. Therefore, to elucidate the liquid crystal phase, it is necessary to understand those relations on the structure.In this study, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman spectroscopy simultaneous measurements of N-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-4-butylaniline (MBBA) were performed. We will discuss the main factor of the phase transitions and the mechanism of the formation of the phase based on the experimental results.

A TN-LCD is one of major display modes for small-size LCD monitors. In the LCD, an appropriate amount of a chiral material doped into a liquid crystal medium is an important factor to determine the performance of the display mode. Until now, several methods have been proposed, but the methods have inherent problems to use. In this study, we have proposed a new method to measure the twist angle of LC medium having amorphous-alignment structure and demonstrate the usefulness the method by showing the experimental results of the chiral twisting power of two chiral dopants.

We previously discovered a novel type of discotic liquid crystals (LC) of 1,3-alkadiynyl-4-benzoic acids (nPhDA) and reported the phase transition behavior of nPhDAs and its mixed LC systems with 4-alkoxybonzoic acids (nOBA) known for the calamitic LC system of its dimer. In this study, we investigated the structure and physical properties of supramolecular LC systems of nPhDA and some kinds of pyridine derivatives (nPy), which exhibit no LC phase by themselves, in order to discuss a correlation between the structure of supramolecular dimers and the formation of LC phase constructed by hierarchical self-assembly of nPhDA/nPy dimers.

It is known that a binary system of liquid crystals, 4-methoxybenzylidene-4-butylaniline (MBBA) and 4-ethoxybenzylidne-4-butylaniline (EBBA) forms a solid solution. In this study DSC measurements of MBBA1-xEBBAx confined within the silica gel pores were performed to discuss the thermal stability within the pores. As the results, MBBA1-xEBBAx was found to be formed the solid solution within the pores and the phase transition temperatures of MBBA1-xEBBAx were decreased within the pores.

Rod-like nitroxide radical (NR) compounds show abrupt increase in magnetic susceptibilities at their transitions from crystalline phases to liquid crystalline or liquid phases (magneto-LC effects). [1] However, the origin of magneto-LC effects has not yet been clear. Naturally, the increase of the number of radical moiety is expected to induce the increase of the magneto-LC effects. In fact, an all-organic biradical LC compound has recently been reported to show strong magneto-LC effects.[2] Here, we report the synthesis and the magnetic properties of two novel all-organic biradical LC compounds.
