The generated pressure in a conventional high pressure apparatus have been limited by the yield or fracture strength of anvil materials, such as tungstencarbide (WC) and diamond. The limitation of static high presure generation was analysed and discussed on the basis of elasticity and plasticity. In order to exceed such a limit, an anvil device due to multi-body contact (MBC) method was developed and its availability was confirmed by experiments using 8 improved anvils of WC in a 6-8 anvil type high pressure apparatus.
Ultar-high temperatures under static high pressures in a 6-8 anvil apparatus were generated by using flash heating by discharging of a bank of electrolytic capacitors.
In order to monitor the temperature by two colour pyrometry, a high pressure cell with optical path and 8 anvil with a small hole through an optical fibre were used. The melting behaviors of graphite were investigated from the profiles of temperature and resistance changes of glaphite by flash-heating.
