Recently, replacement from CRTs to FPDs has been accelerated by promotion of the digital broadcasting. Among FPDs, LCDs are the most promising display device tosatisfy the image quality for television use. In order to secure the superior position of the market, image quality such as contrast ratio, response time and viewing angle has been improved, while large size LCDs are fabricated efficiently using a generation 8^<th> LCD line. In this paper, technologies for new generation LC-TV will be presented.

Preferred luminance of an LCD television screen was measured by the method of adjustment as a function of the angular screen size, subject's age and average luminance level of a displayed image. The results showed that the preferred luminance of LCD screens for young subjects corresponds to the following formula: logPL=-0.23logSA-0.22logAL+2.9. This is where PL is the preferred luminance (cd/m^2) of LCD television screens, SA is the angular screen size (deg) and AL is the average luminance level (%) of the displayed image.
