Recent anthropological studies on Mainland Southeast Asia have often tried to apply gender representations in texts to understand practical gender relation. However, such attempts raise a problem that may disregard practical aspect of gender and complicated situation between gender representations and practice. This presentation attempts to show an aspect of dynamic interaction between gender representations and practice, focusing on contradictory gender representations in a ritual.

Okinawan women in relationships with U.S. military men face discrimination from community members concerned about social problems rightly or wrongly associated with international romance. These women are subject to discrimination on both sides base fences. However, as the actions of my Okinawan female informants demonstrate, they are not passive victims, but are agents resisting the politicization of their love lives.

This paper examines aspects of the social and ecological reality of depopulation and aging on a small mountain township in central Akita Prefecture looking at causes and effects of depopulation based on more than a decade of fieldwork. The argument presented is that critical policy decisions need to be made, soon, to avoid catastrophic consequences of uncontrolled depopulation and aging.

A great deal of research has been carried out on how agriculture and other subsistence systems have created the landscape on which they are practiced. For the Kanto Plain, historical GIS analysis of the Rapid Survey Maps shows that a large proportion of the plain consisted of grassland, bush, and woodland. These natural resource areas fit into the subtle topographic variation of the plains to form a spatial structure analogous to the in-field/out-field system of traditional Europe.

Shinkyo is a commune in Kasama village, Nara Prefecture, Japan. Because the key members belong to traditional Kasama families, the history of Shinkyo is quite different from the history of other Japanese utopian communes. Now it is famous as a home for handicapped people (primarily mentally retarded). I focus on the strategies underlying Shinkyo's 70 years of survival; insider and outsider sentiments; fieldwork issues.

Dr. Seiyu (Setsuzo) Kotsuji was instrumental when the Holocaust refugees came to Japan with the transit visa issued by Chiune Sugihara in Lithuania. Dr. Kotsuji, close to the former Foreign Minister Matsuoka, had influenced the police and the Japanese military authority. By applying the concept of ethnic change, his life (shintoist, Protestant, Pro-Jewish Japanese and Jewish) especially in relation to Harbin Jewish Community is analyzed.

In New Zealand, "traditional" Maori identity has been legitimated and encouraged mainly in the political and judicial trend of "Maori Renaissance" and "retribalization". However from the analysis of the fieldwork among the Maori teenagers living in the city, it comes clear that they re/construct and maintain alternative Maori identity which is multi-layered and characterized by new cultural marks.
