This session discusses the nature-society interface from cultural anthropological perspective, based on ethnographic data concerning human-animal continuity. Our purpose is to raise a question about the relation between nature and society, by paying attention to the continuity. The followings are the presentations: laboratory activity of neuronal physiology, human-animal relation in Borneo hunters, animal symbolism in Tibet, and human-fish continuity in New Guinea.

Urban Native American people often express discomfort and hardship regarding their lives. Through my fieldwork in the San Francisco Bay Area, I aimed to understand these feelings urban Native American people have, and locate them in social and cultural contexts. I conclude that securing ethnic-specific space for Native Americans in urban area would improve their mental health and identity maintenance.

This paper examines the environmental justice movement on uranium mining developments in the southwest USA. Since last year Mt. Taylor, a sacred mountain recognized by nearby tribes, was awarded the state traditional cultural property, it created many conflicts because the area contained rich uranium resources. MASE (Multicultural Alliance for Safe Environment) raises the voices of people of color who were most impacted by the developments.

My presentation reports on externals of the ethnicity from the viewpoint of the food business. The seaside region in Yokohama City Tsurumi Ward is a contact zone with both cultures of Okinawa and South America mix. I try to present various problems in such a zone, and to pump out the possibility of symbiosis and a new cultural creation through daily practices of practitioners who are related to food.

The youths, people in the latter half in their teens, are usually 1) students at secondary school, 2) migrant workers to urban, 3) married to be house-wives. Oahu's Wai'anae district contains the most populous Hawaiian Homesteads in Hawai'i. Recognized as "Hawaiian Land", Wai'anae also embraces broad cultural diversity. By analyzing a cultural revival group in Waia'ane, this presentation sheds new light on how the residents perceive themselves as people of "Hawaiian Land" and at the same time participate in multi-cultural activities.
