JOURNAL FREE ACCESSWith regard to 7Be, a natural radioactive nuclide, the botanical capturing characteristics were compared between eight species of those trees which grow in a local district. The mechanism of such botanical capture by their leaves was discussed. The amounts of captured 7Be were different by tree species. Higher radioactivities were found in the coniferous trees than in the broadleaf trees. The seasonal change of 7Be radioactivity in leaves was significantly higher in winter and spring and lower in summer. Since airborne or fallout 7Be particles stay on the upper face of leaves, the depositted amount depended on the surface area per weight of leaves particularly for evergreen trees. Because the 7Be amount in leaves depended on the fallout capturing ability of leaf's superficial skin as well as the cleaning effect of rain and the like, the radioactivity on the surface can change depending on the surface condition of leaves even in the case the levels of 7Be fallout stayed the same.View full abstractDownload PDF (2563K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA BaF2 scintillation spectrometer has been constructed for the determination of photon energy spectra in workplaces around nuclear facilities. Energy absorption spectra by the BaF2 detector were calculated with the EGS4 Monte Carlo code in the energy region from 0.1 to 100MeV and a response matrix of the spectrometer was obtained from the energy absorption spectra, of which the energy resolutions were modified to fit to the experimental results. With the irradiation experiments using neutron-capture gamma rays and those from radioactive sources, it became clear that photon energy spectra can be evaluated within an error of about 10% in the energy region 0.1MeV to a few tens of megaelectronvolts.View full abstractDownload PDF (951K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe final results of a nationwide indoor radon survey are presented based on one year measurements at more than 7, 000 houses throughout Japan. In conclusion, the annual average indoor radon concentrations in 5, 717 houses are finally obtained as the output of the survey after scrutinizing the raw data of more than 28, 000 measurements. The arithmetic mean and its standard deviation of radon concentration are given to be 20.8 and 18.8Bqm-3, respectively. The median, 90 percentile and 99.5 percentile were 16.0, 35.5 and 138Bqm-3, respectively. The arithmetic mean, median and 90 percentile of each prefecture are also presented to identify the regional variation of radon concentrations. Radon concentrations in wooden houses show regional differences closely related to granite distribution. However, radon concentrations in non-wooden houses show no typical pattern related to geology. The equivalent dose due to radon progeny in Japan is estimated to be 0.59mSvy-1 applying the same assumptions given in the UNSCEAR 1993 Report to the arithmetic mean obtained in this survey.View full abstractDownload PDF (1314K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA transfer model has been developed to facilitate the environmental monitoring of fallout (Cesium-137) in a lake system. The transfer of radionuclides between zones (i. e., catchment area, lake water, lake bed sediment and fish) was modeled using standard differential equations. Radionuclide transfer velocities between zones were calculated and expressed as a function of rainfall intensity and periodic tidal effects based on observations in Hinuma Lake, Japan. Parameter perturbation analysis of the model showed: (a) 137Cs concentrations in the lake water (Cw) increased due to the deposition of 137Cs in the lake and 137Cs inflow from the catchment area; (b) Cw fluctuates due to the dilution of lake water by precipitation (i. e. Cw decreases) and subsequent inflow of 137Cs from the catchment area (i. e., Cw increases); (c) Cw increases due to rolling-up of particles of sediments carrying 137Cs when precipitation increases the current velocity in the lake; and (d) cyclic fluctuation of the flow rate with the tidal level causes variations in Cw.View full abstractDownload PDF (1579K) -
