We studied retrospectively the result of Kampo medicine for 29 patients (three males and twenty-nine females with average age of 65.7 years old) with glossodynia by the treatment protocol under traditional diagnosis. Their median contraction period was eight months (0.5-144 months). The target symptoms were mental illnesses in sixteen patients, tongue pain in five patients, oral dryness and depletion of zinc in three patients, and the others in two patients. We administered only Kampo medicine to ten patients with no treatment in the former clinics and continued the former medicines in nineteen patients with Kampo medicine. And we changed Kampo medicine or added western drugs to non-responded patients. Their treatment period was 10.9 months on average. Glossodynia improved in twelve patients remarkably (42%), improved in eleven patients slightly (38%), did not change in four patients (14%), ameliorated in one patient (3%) and could not be followed in one patient (3%). Effective treatment were Kampo medicine in eighteen patients (62%), zinc drug in three patients (10%), both medicines in one patient and vitamin B drug was in one patient (3%). Some modification might be needed in our psychiatric treatment because improvement was less in patients with mood disorder and patients with somatoform disorder.

The purpose of this report is to present a case of bilateral lipomatosis of the tongue. We report a case of a 66-years-old man, presented with multiple nodules arising bilaterally from the margin of the tongue. The nodules were elastic and hard, and the mucous of the tongue surface was normal. The patient underwent the glossectomy for the excisional biopsy on the bilateral nodules. There has been no sign of recurrence as of 1 year and 8 months after surgery. The patient had a previous illness of hypertension, hepatitis type B, hepatocirrhosis, hyperlipidemia and alcoholism. Lipomatosis of bilateral borders of the tongue was suggested to be associated with local factors.

We reported two cases of pemphigus vulgaris (PV) showing initial symptom in oral cavity. The diagnosis of PV was made by laboratory test and tissue biopsy in both cases after exacerbation of symptoms and the development of skin lesion. Symptoms were relieved by oral steroid administration, and in addition by steroid pulse therapy, double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) and immunosuppressant administration in case 2. In cases with persistent erosive lesion, we should keep in mind the possibility of PV, even without skin lesion.

report a case of erythema exsudativum multiforme showing initial symptoms in the oral cavity, which recurred in a short time after curing the primary lesion. The patient was 65-year-old female, who complained eating disorder due to erosive stomatitis. After taking acetaminophen containing drug for common cold, erosive stomatitis appeared in the oral cavity. She admitted to our hospital to improve feeding difficulty, and the treatment of the erosive lesion of the oral cavity. After the steroid treatment the oral lesion was improved. However, the same symptoms recurred at two and half months after the first treatment. Because there was not any preceding drug usage, and high anti-HSV titer of her serum was confirmed, herpes-associated erythema exsudativum multiforme (HAEM) was considered in this case. Steroid therapy was also effective for the recurrent lesion as was the primary and no recurrence was observed until present time.
