In a series of studies on the motility of vas de-ferens
in vitro, a notable difference was found in the sensitivity to autonomic drugs between the testicular and urethral sides of vas deferens of the rat, and such a difference of the sensitivity existed among the vas deferens, seminal vesicle and pro-state gland (coagulating gland).
These results were as follows:
All the vasa deferentia, seminal vesicles andcoagulating glands, except for two cases of the coagulating gland, exhibited no spontaneous contraction.
The sensitivity to acetylcholine and adrenaline was higher in the testicular side than in the urethral side of vas deferens, but to barium chloride there existed no difference between both sides. In the seminal vesicle the difference of the sensitivity to above-mentioned drugs was not distinguishable between the proximal and distal parts.
Comparing the sensitivity to acetylcholine among the accessory genital organs, seminal vesicle was most sensible, followed by coagulating gland and vas deferens in that order.
To adrenaline, however, the testicular side of vas defenrens was so sensible as the seminal vesicle and these two sensitivities were higher than the coagulating gland. The sensitivity of the urethral side of the vas deferens to adrenaline was similar rate to the coagulating gland.
The responses of the accessory organs to bariumchloride differed from that to acetylcholine or adrenaline, namely the vas deferens was more sensible than the other two organs.
In the vas deferens, the variations of sensitivity to three drugs were very extensive compared with other organs. But, there existed a positive correlation in the sensitivity to the drugs between the urethral and testicular side and then the correlation coefficients of sensitivity to acetylcholine andadrenaline were 0.573 and 0.629 respectively, which were significant in 5 per cent. level of significance.
