This paper tried to clarify the background and the influence on Modern publications of government publications and “semi-government publications” on Western studies at the end of Edo Period. The easing of regulations on Western studies and the installing of a letterpress printing machine activated their publication. It became clear many titles in the educational filed in the early Meiji period were written following them.
Digital publishing in libraries can be considered in two aspects: the introduction of e-books and the digitization of paper materials. The role of digital publishing in libraries will be discussed in light of the expanding introduction of e-books, the benefits of e-books, and the revision of copyright law regarding the digitization of paper materials.
In this article, I will discuss the “micro-content of humanities materials,” which applies the e-book's “micro-contenting” method to humanities materials in digital archives. “Micro-contenting” of humanities materials makes it possible to extract parts across materials and use these freely. This method creates new possibilities for the use of humanities materials, but also brings another issue of connecting humanities materials with information in the real world.

NovelJam is a so-called “novel hackathon” in which “authors”, “editors” and “designers” gather in one place to write, edit, proofread, produce and publish a novel based on a theme in a few days.
