Attractive products are changed significantly by requirement definition and conceptual design phase. Quality of product concept, which is result of these phases, depends heavily on creativity of designer ore development team. Therefore, it is difficulty that computer-aided system supports a creative and inventive thinking process, to search a creative design solution. To overcome its difficulty, we developed the synthesis approach which combined the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and the Particles Method of Unified Structured Inventive Thinking (USIT) for supporting to top-down thinking in problem solving process, and confirmed the validity of this approach. In this paper, it applied to some problems using this technique, and this technique was evaluated. The knowledge about which it might argue based on the result is reported.

Market competition is becoming more and more intense, because the technology is improving and creating constantly. If enterprise decision-makers indeed understand the introduction of next-generation technology at the appropriate time point in the development of technical systems and predict the trend, they may continue to secure about market leadership. TRIZ technology evolution theory can be described according to the evolution of technical disciplines through a lot of patent analyses by correlation studies. The analysis of the maturity of technology is an indicator to the product strategy and the direction of research of R & D. In this paper, focusing on maturity period of technology, based on technology evolution theory, we can seek the position of current technical system on the S-curve by using patent analyses from the past to the present of a certain product. As the results, we propose the direction of evolution strategy and respond to life stage and take a vacuum cleaner as an example to report the results.

Countermeasures against heat are one of the important issues for IC chips because the increased IC chip temperature causes malfunction. But the traditional countermeasures such as the cooling fan and the heat sink have a limitation in cooling performance. So we have focused on the cooling channel with superior cooling performance. In this paper, a design method of cooling channel by utilizing the optimality of branching system has been suggested. The cooling performances of the proposed design method have been evaluated by comparing the results of CAE simulation and an experiment.

The topology optimization method is one of the means for structural design problems. This method derives a unique stationary point (conventional solution) from the full design domain which means the maximum domain for the design problem. However, in a multimodal problem, there are some stationary points and the conventional solution from the full design domain is not always the optimal solution. Therefore, it means possible that the design domain different from the full design domain derives the optimal solution. In the past study, we compared the conventional solution to diverse solutions (emergent solutions) from the system for deriving diverse solutions. As a result, it was confirmed that the emergent solution has higher stiffness than the conventional one. In this paper, we compared the derivation process of the emergent solution to the one of the conventional solution. As a result, the concentration of the density distribution was identified as a cause of deriving the superior solution. Therefore, it was indicated that the solution from the part design domain has higher stiffness than the conventional solution in the topology optimization.

Emergence is a phenomenon that a set of agents which obeying simple rules locally defined generates interpretive global structures, which is not predictable from the rules. In the context of engineering design, concept of emergence is often referred to as generator of new designs which looks impressive and something new. In this paper, the authors consider use of the emergence for engineering design in a different perspective. Nowadays, various computer simulations are being used in a large number of design fields. It has, however, a fundamental limitation. They assume well-posed problems(in mathematical sense) as their problems to be deal with, and ill-posed problems are eliminated from their scopes legitimately. In early design stages, however, design problems are often described incompletely and contradictory. Hence, corresponding simulation problems would be ill-posed. These situations are a kind of blind-corner of current simulation technologies, but important in practical sense. The authors argue here that involving the emergence property in simulation enables to handle the illness of such design problems. Beginning with a brief introduction of emergence concept and preceding researches, our emergence based calculation scheme is proposed. Property of the proposed scheme is considered by comparing with a standard form of numerical simulation, followed by results of numerical experiments, which show its calculation performance and property.

The former paper showed the importance of process study by the criteria of digital data to apply IT tools according to their characteristics by way of vitalize Japanese strength to make PLM systems in the Japanese industry, and shows the related 9 essential elements. This following paper reports about the know-how of those essential elements in detail, and adds the studies of the criteria of digital data in the fixing process of specification and structure of the products from the point of data management. Furthermore this report shows the studies of effect from IT investment and corporate IT strategy related to the criteria of digital data from the management point of view. Thus this report clarifies the essential considerations for making a best PLM system from the total point of view.

Today's project management of mechatronics development is difficult to manage, because mechatronics product is becoming highly complicated. This paper proposes an integrated model of the project information based on representation of mechatronics product and product development process. Based on this project model, this paper also addresses a management method of the project. The project model is represented as a process of design tasks and resources. The product model is represented as a design parameter, product function, and product structure. The dependencies between/inside the product and process are modeled as a MDM (Multiple Domain Matrix) matrix and DMM (Domain Mapping Matrix). The system finds and suggests the gap between designer's recognition and derived dependency. This suggestion can help the designer to elaborate and improve the project model. A proto-type system is implemented and applied to the design example of an electric solar boat. The result shows the elaboration process of the project information.

This study proposes a modular design method that considers defense from leakage of the synthetic function. Today's modular design method might lead to an increase in of the leakage of intellectual property. If the modular design were able to conceal the structure of the interactions of product components which realize the product functions, the competitive value of synthetic function might be protected and its life might be extended in the market. The proposed method was implemented to a prototype system (the paper feeder on a photocopier). The result showed the Pareto solution for the trade-offs of manufacturing cost reduction through outsourcing and the defense against the leakage of synthetic function value, indicating a module division plan with both aspects balanced at a high level. The comprehensive evaluation confirmed that the proposed balanced plan accounted for a more satisfactory evaluation value than the other two plans. These application results support the hypothesis that modular design can conceal the structure of functional interactions. Therefore, it was concluded that the proposed module design method was more effective than the existing method, which does not consider the hiding and concealing of the functional interactions of the synthetic value.

This paper proposes a planning support method of design process within the early design stage, where the input and output of a task are not decided. A grouping from the viewpoint of product function and structure is proposed based on product information model. The proposed method support to plan a design process considering the following two viewpoints: (1) good task-grouping and (2) good order of task-processing. In order to construct good task-grouping, the viewpoint of product function and structure is considered. The good task-grouping involved has the intention to read and understand design plans from functional and structural viewpoints. A reducing method of the amount of influence between groups is proposed and whole-product design is recognized by undertaking independent design activities. Also, a method of rework-risk reduction is proposed by removing vain feed-back loop. We describe information processing to derive a design process and verify it by using LSI (Large scale integrated circuit). In conclusion, the proposed method can derive an effective design process in situations where there are no clear input-output relations among tasks.

Resource allocation is an important activity in planning of a product design process so as to achieve a desired result. Aiming at building a methodology of optimal resource allocation, this paper proposes a optimization method of DSM clustering operation for design structure analysis. The proposed method has two independent objective functions, i.e., expected performance and expected quality of designed product. The effect of resource allocation and milestones/options management is regarded in the objective functions. This paper demonstrates its application to a student formula car project, verifies the proposed method and discusses open issues.

It has become important to effectively deploy a series of product as a product family for flexibly meeting with a variety of customer's needs under a given platform. How and when each member of the product family is realized and launched to the market are essential factors toward its strategic planning. This paper discusses the impact of resource constraints and characteristics of the market system on product family deployment. In this paper, a planning problem of product family deployment is mathematically formulated with discrete choice analysis under several assumptions, and its optimization method is configured. Case studies are explored with an illustrative example of product family deployment of circuit boards for digital televisions. These investigation indicates that comprehensive model on product family deployment must includes its interaction with resource constraints and market system and that mathematical approaches must be indispensable toward its strategic planning.

This paper proposes a new methodology that supports to generate product reduce assembly-cost. It consists of three steps; generating assembly operations parts, generating function of parts, supporting to generate solutions to reduce assembly-cost. First step generates assembly operations of parts by comparing structure-data 3D-CAD with the assembly operations stored the assembly data-base. Second step generates function of parts by comparing structure-data and note-form 3D-CAD with the functions stored the function data-base. Third step provides the tailored guidelines for creating the solutions to assembly-cost by combining these extracted applicable elements.

Recently, in order to build sustainable society, transition from conventional business to environmentally conscious business, so called "Eco-business", is eagerly required. For promoting Eco-business, it is effective to support finding out Eco-business ideas. The purpose of this study is to modify an existing methodology for designing new Eco-business ideas. To modify the methodology, we evaluate it through studies of 20 cases of existing Eco-business. Then we modified the methodology; i) to define the Eco-business idea, which is output of the methodology ii) to change the idea generation process, and iii) to modify the evaluation of Eco-business ideas derived from this methodology.

Recently, economic conditions have been worsening and the structure of industry has been changing dramatically. A highly creative service has become important topic since its creative contents are one of the effectiveness ways to differentiate a firm's services from those of its competitors. To cope with this condition, service engineering is proposed. In service engineering, we have already proposed the support method for service design with the aim of acquiring creative solutions based on the similarity among existing service cases. It is important for a service design to acquire multiple domain knowledge efficiently. In this paper, we propose a support method with the aim of acquiring "If-Then format" sentences which are multiple and useful for a service design by using the resource on the web. Finally, the method is verified through the case study of a service.

This paper proposes a framework for co-creating business between IT vendors and clients. The framework is formed of an organization, which essentially acts as a hub between IT vendors and clients, and lifecycle management tools to support them. The tools consist of a service portfolio and design editors/viewers. Clients' requirements, service systems and delivery processes are represented as models with respective editors, referencing for the service portfolio, which stores service lifecycle data. The service portfolio adopts the concept of Axiomatic Design as a foundation for lifecycle data integration, enabling standardization of phases of design processes and identification of design constraints. With this integration, service models with other design aspects can be generated. They will give us better understanding of the value of services, and the tools will help the practitioners share the knowledge with clients and co-create new services.

Although there exist many scenario composing methods, computational support has not been provided enough for scenario design. This paper proposes a method for supporting design of new forecasting scenarios using a causal network and a storyline. This method supports creating storylines, which are assumptions of sub scenarios, as well as composing scenario text based on the causal networks and the storylines. A prototype system is developed for supporting the proposed method. The results of case study illustrated that generating the storylines of a scenario are systematically supported by using the causal network and that composing scenario text is supported by detailing the causal network and the storylines.

The paper proposes a carbon taxation scheme using LCA for clean energy vehicles (CEVs). This taxation scheme can enable to be discussed tax amount, tax revenue and total CO_2 emissions by changing the scenarios and parameters, such as: technology development, energy price and total driving distance. The authors figure out the tax rate 28.05[JPY/kg-CO_2], which makes the hybrid electric vehicle's life cycle cost less than that of conventional gasoline vehicles. The simulation results show that the LCC after taxation of EVs have lowest total cost when battery cost is 0.28 times the 2007 cost, when 90% of 2010 weight level, or when driven more than 151,000 km. In addition, it is expected that elders who drive shorter distances are best suited for HEVs and GVs not EVs considering LCCO_2. The proposed tax system can provide consumers with an incentive to choose vehicles with lower CO_2 emissions.

Mass production and mass consumption brings environmental problems and an exhaustion of resources. Reuse of the product parts is a solution to shift from the current society with mass production/consumption toward a sustainable recycling society. However, most consumers are able to neither find appropriate replacement parts from the market nor to provide the market with the parts they do not require any more due to the lack of detailed knowledge of the product. In order to solve this problem, we are developing a part agent system with the functions to provide advices to consumers on when and which part of the product should be exchanged and on which part is appropriate for its replacement. In this report, a function developed for the negotiation among part agents is described when two or more part agents looking for replacement parts want a same part.

To consider life cycle options at the early phase of design leads to significant reductions in the environmental loads for the whole product life cycle. We have proposed an agent-oriented design support system for life cycle design which agentifies the 3D-CAD solid models with attribute information to obtain design ideas which satisfy environmental requirements at the early phase of design based on 3D-CAD. A designer creates simplified 3D-CAD solid models and adds the attribute information such as designer's intention, disposal process and material properties to each component model. The present study applies the proposed system to the evaluation of the environmental loads of an example problem, that is, a cleaner model created by 3D-CAD.

Determining life cycle strategies at the early stage of life cycle design is crucial for minimizing environmental loads and costs throughout a product life cycle. This article proposes a method for supporting description of life cycle scenario, which is one way to represent a life cycle strategy, based on product life cycle characteristics. The method consists of four main features: (i) step-wise description of a life cycle scenario, (ii) representation of design rationale, (iii) managing design alternatives by using Truth Maintenance System (TMS), and (iv) integrating the results gained from other life cycle design support tools. These four features enable designers to describe and examine various feasible life cycle scenarios. The case study shows that the method successfully supports designers to describe life cycle scenarios easily and efficiently.

Minimizing environmental loads and costs throughout a product lifecycle requires appropriate lifecycle design as well as the design of the product itself. Design of a product involves planning lifecycle strategies, evaluating it from various viewpoints and optimizing the overall picture based on the product and market properties. Product lifecycle strategy can be planned by describing lifecycle scenarios at an early stage and the product architecture should be designed so as to realize the scenario. In this paper, we propose a design support method for product structure design based on lifecycle scenarios. Our method links a lifecycle flow, as a central model of a lifecycle scenario, to product structure by unifying components that go through the same path in the lifecycle flow. The designed structure, therefore, leads to easy management of components throughout the lifecycle and reduce the environmental loads and the costs of lifecycle processes.

Service flow simulation visualizes the process of complex services and helps service designers to improve service offering processes. However, it is difficult to develop simulation models of complex services since methods and guidelines for simulation modeling of service offering processes are unspecified. In this paper, the authors propose a modeling method of Scene Transition Net (STN) for service flow simulation based on the service blue print scheme that visualizes service offering processes and the relationships between service providers and customers. In addition, the authors propose how to simulate the service offering process in which unstable service elements are taken into consideration based on the developed simulation model.

In Service Engineering, a service is represented with its functions and the entities that are needed to express the functions. And in each entity, its attributes that are thought as important variables for the function appearance are described. In this paper, the authors regard a concrete improvement of service delivery process as the purpose of our study, and classify the way of service improvement. On the other hand, at a conceptual design phase, to evaluate the entities' attribute value is effective for the improvement of service, however it is not clear which entity is fit to express a certain function in the first place. Therefore, this paper proposes the analytical method to discriminate the fitness of entities for the improvement of service delivery process.

In the design of matured product, it is important design a product sound as a kansei(affective) quality. Most of product sounds have ultiple tones e.g. harmonic overtones caused by frequency of fans. In the music theory, tones have chords. People often feel comfortable in chordal tones. The authors assume that chordal harmony in machine sound improves the product kansei quality. To verify the assumption, we synthesized product sound samples (vacuum cleaner) having different tone frequencies and powers. Using the synthesized samples, we conducted kansei evaluation experiments. The result shows that the chordal features of tones are effective to improve product kansei quality.

This paper points out that emotion comes from the Latin words e(ex, out)+movere (motion) so that it is fundamentally dynamic And it is closely related with motivation and motive, which also comes from the same word. As verbs characterize the English language, and Prolog is based upon first predicate logic, verbs are considered as an expression of decision making. It should be noted that QFD is also based upon verbs for its deployment from quality to functions. If we consider these facts, we could possibly introduce pattern driven approach to link emotion with our decision making.

It is very important for development of a brain machine interface to analysis brain activity. In this paper, we present measurement of brain activation responses during weight shifting by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The subjects shift their weight from side by side, and we measure their brain activation by near-infrared spectroscopy. To evaluate effects of skin blood flow, we used probes with two distinct distances (15mm and 30mm) for NIRS and simultaneously measured skin blood flow. We also measured the position of the center of gravity by the ground reaction force meter. The results showed that oxy-Hb changes were influenced by direction of movement, we also found that NIRS signals generally reflected skin blood flow.

It is pointed out in this paper that although engineering education in Japan has emphasized upon how we can produce better products with less time and cost, and recently it has changed to think more of what products we should produce, it is more important in the days of rapid changes and increasing globalization, to think why we produce such a product. To think that engineering is nothing other than the act of creation, this is very natural and it is in a way return to the basics. But thinking about why we produce such a product leads to service oriented engineering, because it is nothing other than to respond to our customer's true needs.

In the design education, it is important to experience a series of process of the product design. This article shows the practice that the mechanical systems were designed by using 3D CAD. Modeled 3D CAD data, which were industrial product with moving parts by mechanism, were verified by CAE. My students could check validity of their work by CAM and mechanism analysis.

In this paper we propose a model for sound-absorbing poroelastic materials using the homogenization method, based on the asymptotic approach. The proposed model is consistent with microscopic structure and yields a macroscopic governing equation with properties predicted directly from microscopic geometry. In this model, four properties for the solid phase and two properties for the fluid phase are calculated by averaging characteristic functions of the periodic microscale model. These properties are then substituted into the macroscopic governing equations to evaluate performance such as the sound absorption coefficient for normal incidence. We show how the actual size of the microscale affects the sound absorption coefficient, using a three-dimensional microstructure model.

Organic light emitting diode (OLED) has high contrast, high response and electrical power saving ability. The emission spectrum from OLED structure depends on film thickness and refractive index of the thin films. In addition, the designing process becomes more difficult increasing the number of materials used for OLED. The structural optimization of thin films is useful to satisfy a design specification. We developed the system which could optimize film thickness and refractive index of each layer simultaneously by genetic algorithm. In this paper, we report results of the optimum design of OLED by the genetic algorithm and the two-stage optimization using the conjugate gradient method.

This paper deals with design method for thermal-fluid interaction problem by topology optimization. A design problem of a flow channel in a heat exchanger is formulated as the optimization problem for maximization of heat transfer. For the topology optimization, the governing equations of thermal and fluid fields are modified based on Navier-Stokes and heat transfer equations. Using design examples of flow channel in heat exchangers, it is shown that the distinct and complicated topology corresponding to heat conditions can be obtained.

This paper discusses a geometrical optimization method for thermoelectric generators. Our method provides the optimized geometry in accord with various arbitrary conditions such as types of materials, volume of materials, temperatures of installation position, and shape of installation position. It has the potential to contribute to improving thermoelectric devices in supporting design stages. By establishing the coupled equations of state for the thermoelectric problem, an analytical model subject to these equations is introduced that mimics the closed circuit composed of the thermoelectric materials, electrodes and a resistor. The total electric power lost through the resistor is formulated as an objective function for optimization. The proposed optimization method for thermoelectric generators is implemented as a geometrical optimization method using the solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) method used in topology optimizations. Simple relations are formulated between the density function of SIMP method and physical properties of thermoelectric material. Sensitivity analysis for the objective function is formulated with respect to the density function and the adjoint equations required for calculating it. Depending on the sensitivity, the density function is updated using the method of moving asymptotes, which has numerous benefits in various optimization problems by virtue of its combination with topology optimization. Finally, the numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the validity of our method.

Life cycle time expansion of equipments and devices such as internal combustion engines become big issues under heat loads. Topology optimization for heat diffusion is one of expected solution to overcome this problem. This paper has tried to establish a topology design optimization method of coupled state filed by COMSOL Multiphysics. As a first step to this purpose, we have solved topology optimization problems of heat diffusion by SIMP method. Several numerical design examples are implemented in order to confirm the validity of optimum design of heat diffusion.

Layout design of highly packed equipments is under not only its geometric conditions but also its physical conditions, such as radiation characteristic, structural strength, electromagnetic shielding. Its characteristic shares some concepts with the paradigm of multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO). However, applicability of MDO is still natively limited within continuous optimization problems. This paper proposes a basic idea for optimization-based layout design approaches, in which layout space is minimized and radiation characteristic is optimized simultaneously. In the approach, the layout topology is represented with sequence quintuple and optimized with simulated annealing (SA), while radiation characteristic is evaluated by thermal network method concurrently at the arranged stages in the double loop of the developed SA algorithm. The relationship between concurrency of evaluation and solution quality is discussed with numerical experiments.

The present report proposes an evaluation function of openability considering gripping postures (two-finger gripping and three-finger gripping) so as to evaluate opening ease of aluminum beverage bottles and to specify the rigorous dimension of cap diameter that is best suited for consumers' satisfaction. The evaluation function is defined as the ratio between the maximum torques that consumers can apply and the required torque for opening. In addition, the cap diameter is the only design variable, and the thumb length, which associates with the maximum gripping force, is selected as the state variable in order to take individual differences into consideration. Moreover, the function is formulated considering the shift of gripping postures of consumers. The function is composed by using the data obtained from the measurement of the maximum gripping force, maximum torque, and the thumb length, and then the function is optimized. The result of optimization shows that the optimum opening diameter is obtained at 28.0 mm.

The present report investigates consumers' gripping postures of caps when they unscrew the cap of aluminum beverage bottles so as to evaluate opening ease of the cap. We have investigated the effect of the cap diameter and the sizes of consumers' hand on gripping postures. Results from a survey on gripping postures, most of subjects have gripped the cap with two kinds of gripping postures, i.e., two-finger gripping and three-finger gripping. It is found that the gripping posture of subjects shifts from the two-finger gripping to the three-ginger gripping when the diameter reaches about φ37. In addition, the sizes of palm correlate with the transition diameter from the two-finger gripping to the three-finger gripping. Similarly, the magnitude of maximum gripping torque of the two gripping postures is inversed. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the shift of gripping postures of consumers caused by the cap diameter and individual differences in order to evaluate openability.

It is different by an individual how to feel about objects, and it is a subjective characteristic by the Kansei of the individual. This study aimed to evaluate an impression of the three-dimensional objects using the Kansei evaluation, and to investigate an element of the 3D objects and the connection with the impression. As the results of experiment, the shapes which became the first impression correspond with the element of the 3D objects. Therefore we think that the elements and the impressions are related deeply. This study becomes the fundamental researches in the manufacturing such as mechanical engineering, Kansei engineering and the product design.

In the design of kansei (emotional) quality, one of the important issues is to extract causal relations between physical design attributes and the customer's emotional responses. Without such relations, a designer has to rely on his/her own sense that may be different from the customer's. In this paper, we propose a new method for extraction of logical rules consisting of combinations of design attributes that explain a customer's emotional judgment towards product appearance. In the method, we apply a reduct calculation in rough set theory to derive alternatives of causal rules between design attributes and emotional judgments, and use the customer's eye gaze features for refining the rules. We extract two types of visual attentions (VA), i.e., a single visual attention (SVA) and a combinational visual attention (CVA), by using the proposed gaze features. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, we conducted a sensory evaluation experiment using a car-interior design as a case study. In the experiment, multiple participants evaluated impressions of multiple design samples by selecting from a set of words. During the experiment, we recorded the participants' eye gaze movements as coordinates on a screen, and asked them to vocalize aloud what they were thinking. After an evaluation of each design sample, we conducted a retrospective interview. From the results, we confirmed that the estimated SVA and CVA significantly covered the vocalized thoughts and statements made in the retrospective interview. The estimated VA reduced 53% of the erroneous causal rules and improved the quality of the rules. We found a case where two participants making the same emotional judgments have implicitly different points of view when evaluating the same design sample. Most conventional causality analysis has been unsuccessful in finding such diversity of points of view.

In the design of product texture, it is important for a designer to grasp the difference of user's affective characteristics between single-modal sensations and multi-modal one. Customers' emotional responses may differ depending on visual, touch and their combination. In this paper, we propose an evaluation framework to visualize the difference of kansei structure towards product texture between different modalities. In the method, we apply the simultaneous relationship analysis and ISM (Interpretive Structure Model) to structure words for evaluating texture's kansei. The framework considers actions for evaluating touch i.e. haptics and affordances towards texture. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework, we conducted a sensory evaluation experiment using plastic texture samples and cylindrical shapes having different textures as case studies.

Windowpane with optical multilayer coatings has ability to control the color and solar energy through the glass. The optical transmittance in the visible region is affected by the interference in the multi-layer coatings. It follows that any color emerges on the scenery through the window. Therefore, it is important to design the color according to the user's own preferences for residential usage. The chromaticity diagram can indicate a specific color by using RGB values in the two-dimensional diagram. This paper reports on the results of design of the multilayer coatings to satisfy the user's sense of the color using the uniform chromaticity scale diagram.

The weak points of the conventional liquid detergents are their size and weight. We have developed the twice concentrated liquid detergent named "Top NANOX" to solve these problems. Furthermore, a good container was needed to be designed for NANOX. We achieved the compactness, reduction of CO_2 by the transportation efficiency improvement, and easiness to handle the bottle. And also, we used CAE to check the designs about compressive strength, influence of the minute shape on decompression strength, and then we got the optimized design.

An acoustic noise prediction system has been developed to reduce acoustic noise of electric equipment such as servers. The system can accurately predict the noise in frequency-domain without an actual prototype by coupling two acoustic simulation methods, which are: (1) a boundary elements method (BEM) for low-frequency prediction, and (2) a combined method of both statistical energy analysis (SEA) and geometrical acoustics for high-frequency prediction. The prediction accuracy in high-frequency has been improved by considering higher-order diffractions of an exterior space. We show that our system predicts acoustic pressure of the equipment precisely enough and leads to a good coincidence with actual measured values.

In our paper, we evaluated three kinds of error cost functions for primitive fitting and proposed some criteria of primitive fitting evaluation for CAD meshes. This approach can be used for automatic evaluation for full automatic segmentation on high accurate CAD mesh.

This paper presents a simple method for normalizing poses of CAD meshes or polygonization of CAD models. Since CAD models involve many extrusion features, we find normalized poses by voting this extruding direction. This approach can easily capture a normalized pose for the CAD meshes, whereas PCA-based methods are misaligned for most cases and the result is free from numerical errors. This paper also demonstrates our method is efficient for several applications to CAD and voxel-based mesh generation.

Leather texturing is an important decoration technology for plastic parts. Since it is heavily based on human skills, it has been a critical issue to introduce digital processing for design and manufacture of the leather texture. In this research we propose new algorithms to synthesize leather textures in a computer based on some image processing techniques. These synthesized textures are free of artificial impressions, scalable and controllable. In particular we succeeded in reconstructing fold lines running over the leather surface.
