In the present study,27 patients were studied 2 or more years post colostomy, with regard to changes in weight and abdominal wall subcutaneous fat. Results showed that preoperative weight had decreased by 3.6 ± 2.0 kg at discharge, but had increased by 6.5 ± 4.7 kg compared with those one year post colostomy. Subcutaneous fat was serially measured over time in 10 patients and the results showed increases of 9 ± 5 mm at one year post colostomy and 12 ± 5 mm at 2 years post colostomy.
These findings suggest that patients should be educated and followed long-term for possible postoperative weight gain and stoma appliance replacement. We also concluded that the stoma site should be positioned to allow for increased postoperative weight and subcutaneous fat.
