The purpose of this study was to clarify the present status of social activities and associated factors in ostomates. The subjects were 463 ostomates who belong to 3 national ostomy associations and the Stoma Construction Patient Association in Hospital A.A questionnaire was performed, and replies were obtained from 331 ostomates(response rate,71.3%).As a result of confirmatory factor analysis,a social activity scale consisting of “social participation,”“learning activity,”and“personal activity”was obtained. The Cronbach’s α coefficient was high for the entire scale and each subscale. Evaluation of the association between background variables in the ostomates and social activity measured using the above scale showed more social activity with higher score for“affirmative ways of living”and“subjective health”and a lower score for “anxiety about the future.”

PURPOSE:We examined the usefulness of loop enterostomy with the aid of dripshaped skin incision,an operative mode which was devised in our department,in order to provide:1)A minimal operative wound,2)in a relatively short time,3)more safely, and 4)easily.The subjects were patients who suffered disturbed intestinal passage due to various causes after abdominal surgery and thus required enterostomy.
METHODS:The skin at an interded site of enterostomy was circularly resected with the size of a 500 yen coin and an additional linear incision was made on its upper side. After exteriorization of the designated intestines,a stoma was created at the circularly resected site. The additionally-incised site on the upper side was closed in a buried suturing manner. In terms of operation time, difficulties in performing enterostomy and possible complications after operation, our enterostomy procedure was compared with the conventional approach having different sites for enterostomy and laparostomy.
RESULTS:The drip-shaped skin incision we devised was indicated to be a useful intervention as an operative mode for enterostomy by referring to the 4 items mentioned above.
