10 kW fiber laser welding of stainless steel produces deep-penetration welds of more than 12 mm depth, and thus high laser absorption is expected. This research reports the characteristics of 10 kW fiber laser absorption measured in stainless steel with calorimetric method under several welding conditions.

If a steep refractive index gradient by a thermal distribution is generated above the specimen during welding, a inflection of the laser light path will be induced, which is similar to the phenomena of a mirage and a heat haze.
Therefore, in order to investigate the amount of the inflection of the ray path, a numerical calculation about the laser trajectory in assumptive refractive index media by a temperature gradient was carried out.
As the result of the calculation, it was suggested that the steep refractive index gradient above the specimen during welding may degrade the beam quality and induce the focal point to shift far.

A fiber laser-MIG hybrid welding process was introduced to weld of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) butt-joints. Experimental investigations were carried out to examine the influence of the distance between laser and arc, focal position, gap and arc currents on weld bead top appearance, cross section, microstructure, microhardness and tensile properties of the welds. Optical metallography and Vickers microhardness test show that the weld metal has the coarsest grains and the highest microhardness compared with the HAZs and base metal. It is found that the processing parameters have a great influence on the bead dimension. Results show that the processing parameters has no influence on tensile strength of the welds, but have great influence on the elongation the welds. Tensile test shows that the joints obtained by hybrid fiber laser-MIG welding have better combination of strength and ductility.

High Mn steel has been developed for automotive applications since the steel has an excellent combination of strength and ductility. However, high Mn steel has a few problems related to its chemical compositions in welding. In this study, development of dissimilar laser welding technology has been investigated for expanding application of high Mn steel. The results have shown that dissimilar weld joint between high Mn steel and carbon steel has poor mechanical properties using STS309L filler wire or not.

Dissimilar metal joining of SUS304 stainless steel to A5052 aluminium alloy has been investigated by laser roll welding using a 2kW fiber laser. The effects of process parameters such as roll pressure and flux on the formation of intermetallic compound and the joint properties. In the case of using flux, most of the specimen were failured in the softened HAZ in tensile shear test. The higher the roll pressure is, the higher the tensile shear strength of specimen is. The joint efficiency was 85%.

Laser welding that has the high energy density is excellent method , because of narrow welding bead and heat-affected zone.
However, when steel sheet is welded without shielding gas, thick iron oxide film forms on the surface of the weld.
And thick iron oxide film causes reduction of coating adhesion.
This report shows about behavior of iron oxide film and influence on coating adhesion.

SUS304 is a material that causes the work hardening. In the multilayer welding, the multiple thermal cycle is received. It is guessed that the welding deformation is different in one pass and multilayer welding because of the work hardening. It was examined whether to cause this difference by the experiment and the numerical analysis.

To suppress stress corrosion cracking of the inside surface of the stainless steel pipes that are widely used for nuclear power plant, a new welding process for reducing the tensile residual stress of the welded zone, which is one of the factors inducing stress corrosion cracking, was developed.
The feature of the developed welding process was that, in order to reduce the tensile residual stress, a low transformation temperature welding wire, which has martensitic transformation expansion in room temperature after welding, was used to suppress the solidification shrinkage of the weld metal.
Moreover, the tensile residual stress of the welded zone could be reduced by the welding process, and special additional equipments such as heating and cooling system were not necessary.
A austenitic stainless steel pipe was welded by using low transformation temperature welding wire, and the residual stress of the inside surface of the pipe after welding was measured by using released stress method with strain gauges.
The result indicated that, compared with the usual welding process, which used a welding wire of austenitic stainless steel and produced tensile residual stresses of +100MPa or more, the developed welding process produced compressive stresses of -100MPa or less for both of the hoop and axial directions. Therefore, the effect of reduction of residual stress was significant by using the developed welding method.

Welding process for residual stress reduction was investigated on the fillet-welded joint by using low transformation temperature welding materials. As a result of having examined some welding sequence by using numerical analysis, residual stress on the weld toe near the edge of stiffener was reduced by dividing the weld line into the side part and the edge part in comparison with the weld sequence of welding at a time.It is found that the divided welding process is effective to reduce the residual stress on the weld toe.
