The AA-plasma welding of SUS304 stainless steel was studied. The experimental results show that the arc generated by the plasma welding machine is more centralized and can form deeper penetration of welding pool due to a larger temperature gradient on the weld pool surface. Additionally, the effect of parameters such as oxygen concentration, welding speed and arc length on the shape of the AA plasma welding was also investigated.

Hot cracking susceptibility of commercial alloy 52 filler metals was evaluated by Varestraint test. Ductility-dip cracking susceptibility was decreased with an increase in tortuousness of grain boundary in the weld metal. The filler metal 52MSS was negligibly susceptible to ductility-dip cracking, while solidification/liquation cracking susceptibilities were heightened in the filler metal 52MSS.

In laser cutting, cutting condition tuning is performed by operator to fit the cutting order. However, this tuning depends on operator's skill and the operator cannot perform tuning if he doesn't know which parameter is significant for this cutting. In this study, the authors try to extract operator's skill about cutting condition tuning using Taguchi method, and verify this method can use as skill analyzing tool or not.

An experimental study of a torch for oxygen plasma arc cutting (PAC) was conducted. We made a nozzle equipped with a window and a port for observation the hafnium (Hf) electrode during working, using a color high-speed video camera through the window. We estimated the temperature on the surface of the Hf electrode assuming the black body radiation of the surface. We could estimate the real-time flow rate of plasma gas by the pressure in the nozzle.

A FEM software JWELD using inherent strain method is developed for the prediction of welding and assembling deformation. With this software, welding deformation of large structure can be calculated in few minutes. To satisfy the requests of industrial users, a predictor of inherent deformation parameters is also developed. Furthermore, the gap of a weld joint, influence of fixture and welding sequence can be easily simulated using this software.

The concept of inherent strain is closely related to those of inherent stress, inherent deformation and inherent force. Since the inherent strain is transformed into the deformation when the restraint is small and it is transformed into the stress when the restraint is strong, the framework of FE code for welding simulation can be naturally and conveniently constructed by combining these concepts. The idea how they are integrated in the FE code is presented in this paper.
