We developed an analytical method for musty odor substances Geosmin and 2-MIB using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. The method was able to quantify 100 ng/L of Geosmin and 50 ng/L of 2-MIB by direct aqueous injection. Also, it capable for quantifying 1/10 of the standard value for Geosmin and 2-MIB in the Japanese Waterworks Act by using it in combination with Solid Phase Extraction. Furthermore, we have conducted a validation test to confirm the validity of the analytical methods. The linearity of calibration curves and selectivity were satisfactory for both substances. The accuracy, repeatability, and intermediate precision for both substances obtained by the recovery tests satisfied the criteria in the guideline for the validation of testing methods for drinking water, which has been specified by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan. Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry does not need the Helium gas which is difficult for purchase due to the supply and demand. Therefore, this water analysis method has a potential which alternative to GC-MS analytical method for Geosmin and 2-MIB.
