In an investigation of epiphytic bryophytes in the urban areas around Fukuyama City, 23 species (17 mosses and 6 liver-worts) were recognized. The most common species were Frullania muscicola, Hypnum yokohamae var. kusatsuense, Glyphomitrium humillimum, Sematophyllum pulchellum, Venturiella sinensis and Fabronia matsumurae. Fukuyama City was divided into three zones based upon the floristic composition of the epiphytic bryophyte species present.
The author has been working on protoplasts of bryophytes. Techniques related to isolation and culture of protoplasts of bryophytes are described. He also discusses the production of somatic hybrids by protoplast fusion in bryophytes and their future prospects.
