A luminous moss Schistostega pennata was found from Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture in 1979. The moss grows luxuriantly in six caves at about 460m elevation. The species was described on the basis of our plants : plants small, simple, 6-8 mm high, 2-3 mm broad, yellowish green ; stems ca. 50μm thick, with cortical cells 105-132μm long, 16μm wide ; cells of leaf-blade rhomboid, 100-158μm long, 21-26μm wide, chloroplasts 21-40 per cell, mostly 5-6μm in diameter lens-shaped cells of protonema 25-30μm in diameter, each containing 10-16 chioroplasts.

Asexual reproductive bodies, gemmae, were newly found on branches of Pterobryum arbuscula collected from Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture. The gemmae of P. arbuscula are clustered around the tip of branches and are ovoid to spindle-shaped, dark-green, smooth, 100-200μm long, 30-45μm thick and consisting of 10-20 cells with yellowish- or reddish-brown cell walls (Fig. 1). They are borne on filamentous, branched stalks. The size and number of the gemmae are variable. Terminal cells of the gemmae are usually thin-walled and obliquely walled, which suggests that the cell division occurred at the apical cell, not at the basal cell. Collections from several other localities in Japan were found to bear numerous gemmae. The presence of gemmae appears to be rather common in this species. Another species, Ptcrobryum subarbuscula Broth., is known in Japan from Yakushima Isl., of which. Noguchi (1937) described the gemmae whose character closely resembles that of P. arbuscula. Representative specimens in which gemmae were observed. Pterobryum arbuscula Mitt. Honshu. Saitama Pref., Chichibu-gun, Ohtaki-mura, 1700 m, Higuchi 10774 (HIRO). Hiroshima Pref., Jinseki-gun, Jinseki-cho, 400 m, Higuchi 5235 (HIRO). Shikoku. Tokushima Pref., Miyoshi-gun, Mt. Tsurugi, 1100 m, Higuchi 5425 (HIRO). Kyushu. Kumamoto Pref., Kikushi City, 550 m, Higuchi 10727 (HIRO). P. subarbuscula Broth. Formosa. Prov. Tainan, Mt. Kodama, Noguchi 5883 (NICH).

Gollania philippinensis (Broth.) Nog., previously known only from the Philippines and Taiwan, is recorded for the first time in the continental China. This moss is characterized by having cylindrical leafy stems, deeply concave and almost entire leaves with a short, sometimes reflex acumen and slightly short costae for this genus. Leaf characters are illustrated. Specimen examined. China. Guangdong, Lechang Country, on soil by marsh, April 1964, coll. P. M. He 7 (HIRO).

The sporophyte of Hygrobiella nishimurae N. Kitag. is newly described as follows : seta up to 3-5 mm long, 190-220μm broad, consisting of 8 outer and 4 inner cells (Cephalozia type); capsule blackish-brown, broadly oblong-ovoid, 280-320 × 260-280μm, 4-valved to base, its wall 2-stratose, epidermal cells subquadrate to short-oblong, 12-24×26-32μm, with well-developed nodular thickenings, (0-) 1-2 (-3) per face of longitudinal and transverse walls, inner cells elongated narrower, 32-66×12-16μm, with semiannular bands which are often reduced to nodular thickenings. Elaters 100-160μm long, 5-8μm wide, with 2 spirals, the spirals reddish-brown, slender, 3-3.5μm broad ; spores reddish-brown, 18-22μm in diameter, finely papillose. It seems that there is no remarkable qualitative difference between the sporophyte of Hygrobiella nishimurae and that of H. laxifolia.
