The relationship between the number of shoots in a cushion and the water holding capacity is examined for Bryum argenteum. The bigger the volume of the cusion, the more the water holding capacity increases. In a large cusion of more than 100 shoots, the quantity of water lost becomes small.
Cultivation of bryophytes is rather common in Japan, especially for 'Bonsai' as well as in moss gardens. Details are given of a method of cultivation used in the Hattori Botanical Laboratory to preserve rare species of bryophytes, such as Takakia. Temperature-controlled cabinets with windows (such as have been used at many food stores to keep and sell milk and other soft drinks) are utilized. The same method has been used in studies of chromosome numbers.
