A list of Hepaticae and Anthocerotae of Japan was presented by Mizutani (1984). In the last ten years, many nomenclatural changes, new taxa and new additions were reported for the Japanese flora (Mizutani & Furuki 1994). Mizutani (1984) treated only taxa reported from the area extending from Yakushima Island, southernmost part of Kyushu, northward to Rebun Island, northernmost part of Hokkaido. We treat here all taxa reported from Japan including Ryukyu, Bonin (Ogasawara) and Volcano (Iwo) Islands by the end of 1993. We list alphabetically the current names of Hepaticae and Anthocerotae. The list comprises 612 species in 134 genera of Hepaticae and 17 species in 6 genera of Anthocerotae.
