Boron phosphide(BP)films were grown on Si and sapphire substrates by thermal decomposition of a B
2H
6-PH
3 mixture in hydrogen at high temperature. The crystal quality and electrical properties of the BP films were studied. The conductivity type of BP on Si was almost n-type, but that BP on sapphire was p-type. Therefore, it is considered that Si doping during the growth act as donors in BP film.

Dielectric barrier materials of Ca
1-x Sr
xTiO
3 were fabricated at low temperature by using Li
2Si
2O
5 as a sintering aid and their mechanical and dielectric properties were systematically investigated. They were successfully used as dielectric barriers to break CO
2 by dielectric barrier discharge plasma in a planar reactor. The CO
2 conversion was much higher when used Ca
1-x Sr
xTiO
3 barriers than that used Al
2O
3 and silica glass.

We have studied the NOx reduction system in the presence of excess oxygen. This catalyst system has a laminated structure of NOx removal catalyst and solid electrolyte layers, and can decompose NOx and eliminate O
2 in gas mixture, simultaneously. In this study, gadolinium-doped ceria (CGO) was selected as a solid electrolyte due to its higher O
2- conductivity rather than YSZ at lower temperature. However, CGO does not have enough fracture strength, so we attempted the improvement of mechanical properties of CGO by dispersing Al
2O
3 particles with high strength. And, we evaluated the electrical and catalytic properties of Al
2O
3-CGO based catalyst system.

We have reported the hexaaluminate/ yttria-stabilized zirconia stacked system could decompose NOx to nitrogen without any reductant gases in the presence of excess oxygen. In this study, we investigated the relations between catalytic and electrical properties of catalyst system and microstructures of each layers and interfaces.

In this study, photocatalytic activities for hydrogen evolution of silicon carbide / silicon nitride powders are investigated. Photocatalytic reactions are carried out in a closed gas cell system with a quartz window at room temperature. The electrodes are obtained by the electrophoretic deposition. The hydrogen evolutions of these are compared with photoelectrochemical properties, the band gap energy (Eg) and the flat band potential (Ufb), which are obtained by the photoelectrochemical measurement with 500 W Xe lamp and optical monochromater.

The microalloying effects of transition metals, M (M: Nb, Mo, Ta, W) on the photoelectrochemical properties of zirconium oxide were investigated. Button ingots of zirconium-5mol% M that made from high-purity metals (99.9% purity) by arc melting in a purified argon atmosphere were cut and homogenized. Subsequently, the specimen surface was polished and cleaned ultrasonically, and oxidized at 1173 K for 30 minutes in Air.The photocurrent was evaluated at room temperature under the irradiation of Xe lamp. In the case of Zr-Nb, the value of the flat band potential was higher than that of pure zirconium.

Ferroelectric materials with perovskite structure or layer perovskite structure are known as high efficient photocatalysts for water splitting into H2 and O2 under UV-light irradiation. In the present study, SrBi
2Ta
2O
9(SBT) and SrBi
2-xLa
xTa
2O
9(SBLT) with layer perovskite structure that are promising for ferroelectric randam access memory (FeRAM) due to their ferroelectric and fatigue property are synthesized by polymerizable complex method in which powder with high homogeneity and large specific surface area are obtained, and their photocatalytic properties for water splitting under UV-light irradiation were measured.

A titania-based self-standing film having high transparency and flexibility was prepared via a sol-gel process in a hydrophobic solvent with a salt catalyst. The sol obtained by the sol-gel reaction floated on the water surface to form the unsupported film. This film was composed of a titania/isostearate nanocomposite with a layer structure. The basal spacing of the layer structure depended on the chain length of the carboxylate modifier.

Fibrous SrTiO
3 were prepared by two kinds of methods: solid state reaction of fibrous TiO
2 and SrCO
3 and hydrothermal reaction of Sr(OH)
2 and H
2Ti
4O
9. Fibrous SrTiO
3 prepared by hydrothermal reaction consisted of nanosize crystals with high crystallinity and showed higher photocatalytic activity than that prepared by solid state reaction. Nitrogen could be doped in fibrous SrTiO
3 by calcining the powder in the atmosphere of NH
3 at 600
oC. The nitrogen doped fibrous SrTiO
3 exhibited the excellent photocatalytic NO destruction capability in the visible light range.

Our research group has studied on the resource recovery of inorganic waste. From the results, conversion processes of incineration fly ash into cation-exchanger and industrial waste including iron into anion-exchanger have been successfully developed. In the present work, we report conversion processes of the industrial waste including iron into sorbent for hydrogen sulfide.
