This study quantitatively analyzed the educational effects of skill achievement through practice from the perspectives of both instructors and students.

The subjects were 62 students in the Department of Oral Health Sciences. Students self‐evaluated their achievement after sharpening Gracey curettes used for scaling and root planing, and the instructors evaluated students' achievement of the practice from the based blade morphology made after sharpening of the dull instruments by the students.

The average percentages for three items evaluated as "Satisfactory" by instructors was 66.0±22.5%, and the average percentage of four items self‐evaluated by students as "Can do" was 75.8±6.3%. In particular, in the instructors' evaluation, "Restoration of the angle and sharpness of the entire blade" was as few as 44%, while the student self‐evaluations were high overall. In addition, the number of students who answered "Can do" over the four practice sessions increased as session progressed with the fourth session increased significantly compared to the first session.

These results show that the addition of student evaluation to instructors' evaluation is effective in fostering students' independence and improving their motivation for learning. Further, the concerns of the practice were identified, and suggestion for the direction of the improvement for practice was provided. Shika Igaku (J Osaka Odontol Soc) 2022; Sep; 85(2): 99-105.

We investigated what dental students want from university education as a prerequisite for independent learning in the true sense of the word. They set their own problems, solve them, and explore them. We conducted this study for students taking “the risk management and patient safety" class in the third year of the School of Dentistry, Osaka Dental University in 2021 using unmarked reports that were filled out as part of the class. We found that dental students enrolled in this course because they were deeply interested in dentistry and dentistry as a specific field and profession. They thought that dentists needed to have easy-to-understand explanation skills, a patient-friendly attitude, a knowledge of dentistry, dental treatment skills, and knowledge of liberal arts. Their image of the dentist they wanted to be was not one of dental treatment skills, but rather a dentist who works well with the staff of the dental clinic, and a dentist who earns the trust of patients. This may be due to the students' desire to live a full life by gaining the trust of their staff and patients. The questionnaire showed that the students themselves have a desire to learn proactively. We opened the Sleep Apnea Outpatients Clinic in the Department of Internal Medicine at Osaka Dental University Hospital in April of 2019 in collaboration with the Sleep Dentistry Center to examine and treat sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). Two step examinations are performed, a simple examination and a polysomnography (PSG) examination. The simple examination, screens for SAS and determines the efficacy of oral appliances (OA) using three apnea parameters, the apnea hypopnea index (AHI), the lowest oxygen saturation, and the hypopnea index (3%ODI), all three of which have a strong correlation. In the PSG examination, apnea parameters correlate with those of the simple examination, while sleep parameters do not correlate with apnea parameters.

Over 21 months, we performed 135 simple examinations and 33 PSG examinations. The collaboration of medical and dental experts in the field will result in effective examination and therapy. Shika Igaku (J Osaka Odontol Soc) 2022; Sep; 85(2): 117-122.
