In this paper, we propose a novel time-frequency analysis method for speech, which consists of 1) subband decomposition by the holomorphic filterbank proposed by us, and 2) detection of time-frequency zeros. By theoretical analysis and experiments, we show that 1) voiced speech generates a stable two-dimensional (2-D) maps of zeros which are different vowels by vowels, 2) it represents pitch structure, formant structure, and glottal excitation instance, which are important for analyzing voiced speech in frequency and time domain.

Digital differentiators of higher degrees are generally realized by cascading multiple first-degree differentiators, which makes them computationally inefficient. In our previous work, we have presented closed form designs of first-degree maximally linear digital differentiators based on the Taylor series. In this paper, we extend that work and present new designs of maximally accurate digital differentiators of arbitrary degrees. Explicit formulas and recursive relationships between tap-coefficients are given, which make their computation very simple.

An industrial controller is designed with the neuro-fuzzy model based on Sugeno-type fuzzy inference, which can be tuned itself by the neural network mechanism based on a gradient descent technique. The proposed method is experimentally tested by varying of process parameters, set points and load disturbance. The level and temperature controls are used to evaluate the efficiency of our controller.

An intelligent digital redesign (IDR) technique for the Takagi--Sugeno fuzzy observer-based output-feedback (FOBOFC) control system with estimated premise variables is developed. The IDR condition is parameterized as a numerical minimization problem of the norm distances between linear operators to be matched. To overcome the effect of modeling errors between nonlinear multiple time-delay subsystems and Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models with multiple time delays, a robustness design of fuzzy control is proposed in this paper. In terms of Lyapunov's direct method, a delay-dependent stability criterion is hence derived to guarantee the asymptotic stability of nonlinear multiple time-delay large-scale systems.

This paper proposes a reconfigurable controller design method in the case that full state feedback is not permissible. A new sufficient condition to guarantee the stability of output feedback reconfigurable controller is suggested. Based on the new condition, an algorithm is introduced that preserves much of the dynamics of the original unfailed system using eigenstructure assignment and genetic algorithms.

This paper presents a novel method to speed up neural network based face detection systems. The method formulates the search problem as an integer nonlinear optimization problem and expands the basic particle swarm optimization to handle it. Experiments results show that to find a face, only a small number of subwindows need to be evaluated compared to using the classical technique.

Anterior guidance by two canines, occlusion and bruxism have been simulated by a 6-DOF mastication motion simulator. Those modes were realized by generalized hybrid control. It will be shown that such a mastication motion simulator is quite useful to confirm and understand various hypotheses on anterior guidance and bruxism, and also to provide a new approach for tooth-treatment.

In this research, EOG (Electrooculogram) signal was analyzed to predict a subject's intention using a fuzzy classifier. The fuzzy classifier was built automatically based on EOG data by evolutionary algorithm. For automatic fuzzy classifier construction without any experts' knowledge, a new evolutionary algorithm is proposed. A new representation scheme, a new fitness function and adequate evolutionary operators were designed for the proposed evolutionary algorithm.

In this paper, we propose a new chaotic itinerant model of mode transition dynamics in human circulatory systems. An essential emphasis of the model is on autonomous mode transition based on chaotic itinerancy of large-scale nonlinear systems. A graph based approach is described for the automatic synthesis of operating procedures in process plants. Plant structure and material processing information are independently modeled by directed graphs, respectively. Subgraph-isomorphism search algorithm is utilized to find path of material conversions and to allocate each process on a specific equipment. The method is successfully demonstrated on a double effect evaporator.

Hypersequential programming is a new way of concurrent-program development, in which the original concurrent program is first serialized, then tested and debugged as a set of sequential programs (scenarios), and finally restored into the target concurrent program by parallelization. Both high productivity and reliability are achieved by hypersequential programming because testing and debugging are done for the serialized versions and correctness of the serialized programs is preserved during subsequent parallelization.

In this paper, multi-objective structure selection of RBF networks based on evolutionary computation is considered. The RBF network structures are encoded to the chromosomes in GA. Then, they evolve toward Pareto optimum defined by some objective functions concerning with model accuracy, model complexity and connection weights. Some numerical simulation results indicate that the proposed approach can give Pareto optimum structures.

In this paper, a new robust control method and stability analysis method using the higher order derivatives of universal learning networks are discussed. The application of these two methods to a Photovoltaic-supplied, separately-excited DC motor with a constant load torque is also studied. The simulation results of the proposed robust control and stability analysis method showed that the robustness of the DC motor system is improved and its stability can be analyzed easily.

The differential pressure standard in the range from 1 Pa to 10kPa has been developed by the method using double pressure balances. In this report, the principle and the calibration system for the method are described in detail. We report a noise reduction algorism concerning about visual motion processing implemented with digital vision chips. The algorism is based on MAP estimation for Markov random vector fields, where Cauchy distribution is used to reduce noise and to detect motion discontinuities. Simulation results show that good estimate and their distinct discontinuities are obtained within a few steps of iterations.

We introduced the method of detecting high-speed and high-precision optical flow using the linear-time optical flow algorithm and the high-speed smart camera with which high frame rate images can be captured and image processing can be performed inside the camera. In this paper, we propose an efficient motion recognition technique based on an eigenspace method. In the proposed system, we use a motion history image and a superposed motion image to create an eigenspace and it is employed for the real time motion recognition.
