  • Thermal Decomposition of Anthracite: Part II

    For the purpose to clarify the effects of roasting atmosphers on the properties of carbon powders for telephone transmitter, powders (50-80 mesh) of purified anthracite are roasted in various atmosphers, viz., nitrogen, hydrogen, town gas, charcoal gas liberated from anthracite itself and vacuum.
    Electrical, physical and chemical properties of the carbon powders thus obtained are investigated.
    It is found that the powders obtained by roasting anthracite powders in the atmosphere of town gas are very stable against humidity and that they are most excellent as carbon powders for telephone transmitter.

    (1) Brush wear depends upon current, brush pressure and characteristics of brushes in significant level, but commutator film and its temperature have only a little effect on brush wear.
    (2) Commutator film could be estimated by fritting type, and fritting voltage which bears a close resemblance to Poisson distribution. Good film is A-type having a large mean value λ.
    (3) Sparks cause film surface worse from type A to C, moreover, make increase the wear amount of brushes by dropping out of carbon particles.
    (4) The amount of brush wear in rolling traction could be calculated by adding each wear rate in sparking, current and temperature.

    The purpose of the present study is to establish the standards for carbon products.
    This paper reports the effect of the graphitizing degree on the machinability of carbons.
    The test was carried out by machining eight grade of carbons of different graphitizing degree with milling machine.
    The Results show that there exists a remarkable correlation between the machinability and the graphitization degree of carbon.
