Energy and resources recovery from sewerage have a great potential as “Japanese” resources in this nation where only limited resources are available. For example, the domestic biosolid can produce electricity equivalent to annual consumption of 1.1 million households, although only 15% was utilized in 2014.This paper shows some efforts by the Government of Japan to promote energy recovery from sewerage, including the amendment of the Sewerage Law in 2015, development of the technical guidelines for energy recovery and integrated treatment with local bio-waste, hydrogen production from biosolid, utilization of sewage heat, support for technological development (

project), and subsidies.Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) adopted the new productivity innovation projects, ‘Sewerage Innovation –Strategy for creating “Japanese resources”–’, in November 2016. It is expected further promoting recovery of potential “Japanese” resources from sewerage through public-private initiative as well as the Government effort.
