The phylogenetic relationship among the genus
Cerithidea including an unidentified congeneric species referred here as species A collected in Suncheon Bay were inferred from nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). Their genetic structures were compared with other congeneric species and their local populations around Japan and Ryukyu Islands. A single
C. cingulata haplotype was detected to be shared between the Suncheon Bay and Yatsushiro populations and it was the most dominant haplotype in both populatioms. The monophyly of species A was supported by a high bootstrap probability (100%) in the analysis using the neighbour-joining (NJ) method, which showed a closer relationship of this unidentified species with
C. alata from Thailand and
C. microptera from the Philippines than with other
Cerithidea species.
C. cingulata,
C. largillierti,
C. djadjariensis and species A populations in Suncheon Bay can be characterized by a low genetic diversity. These characteristics should be attributed to geographical factors, and further study of the connectivity of Suncheon Bay and the habitats in the outside of the bay could shed light on this interesting theme in conservation ecology.

Cerebrovascular diseases, such as stroke and cardiovascular disease, are one of the leading causes of death in Japan. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and an important risk factor for these diseases. Among various pathological conditions associated with type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance has already been reported to be an important risk factor for diabetic complications. The major sites of insulin action in glucose metabolism in the body include the liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue. However, insulin signaling molecules are also constitutively expressed in vascular endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle, and monocytes/macrophages. Forkhead box class O family member proteins (FoxOs) of transcription factors play important roles in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, oxidative stress response and redox signaling, and cell cycle progression and apoptosis. FoxOs in vascular endothelial cells strongly promote arteriosclerosis by suppressing nitric oxide production, enhancing inflammatory response, and promoting cellular senescence. In addition, primary aldosteronism and Cushing’s syndrome are known to have adverse effects on the cardiovascular system, apart from hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. In the treatment of endocrine disorders, hormonal normalization by surgical treatment and receptor antagonists play an important role in preventing cardiovascular complications.

The level of osteopontin (OPN) increases during bacterial lung infection. However, the OPN level in virus-induced lung injury is unclear, and the relationship between the hyer-production of OPN and lung injury remains to be thoroughly understood. Therefore, we sought to determine whether a relationship exists between OPN and pulmonary damage. Particularly, pulmonary edema and the destruction of pulmonary tissue. In this study, we found that the OPN level was significantly elevated in patients with pulmonary damage, and there was a positive correlation between the OPN serum level and disease severity in influenza lung injury. The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is the main mechanism of clearance of pulmonary edema fluid, and matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7) can degrade the extracellular matrix. In lung epithelial cells, OPN markedly decreased the mRNA expression of the α-subunit of ENaC through integrin β3 and CD44 (OPN receptors); however, the expression of MMP7 was promoted by OPN interaction with integrin β1 and CD44. In addition, OPN increased the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6. These findings suggested that OPN might increase influenza virus-induced lung injury by augmenting lung epithelial cell apoptosis and impairing ENaC and extracellular matrix destruction.

The inheritance mode of six previously published and newly developed microsatellite markers was investigated in newly hatched
Haliotis discus hannai larvae from four controlled crosses, and the feasibility of these markers for kinship estimation was also examined. Microsatellite DNA was successfully amplified from
H.
discus hannai larvae using the Chelex extraction method, and at least 15 microsatellite loci could be analyzed in a single trochophore larva. All six microsatellite loci were compatible with Mendelian inheritance. Neither evidence of sex-linked barriers to transmission nor evidence of major barriers to fertilization between gametes from the parents was shown. One of the six microsatellite loci showed the existence of null alleles in one family, indicating that the loci should be used in population studies with caution. Although the null allele heterozygotes were considered as homozygotes in the calculation of genetic distance, offspring from four full-sib families were unambiguously discriminated in the neighbor-joining dendrogram. The result demonstrates that the microsatellite markers might be capable of discriminating between related and unrelated abalone larvae in the situation where no pedigree information is available.

Arteriovenous malformations commonly cause ulcers, but less emphasis has been placed on the fact that venous hypertension in the leg is responsible. We report the case of a 25-year-old man with a venous leg ulcer caused by an arteriovenous malformation, who presented with a painful left dorsal foot ulcer that had not healed for over a month. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed an arteriovenous malformation with a feeder from the three branches of the lower leg on the medial side of the ulcer. After three rounds of embolization and wound management, although arteriovenous malformations remained, the shunt volume was reduced, and the ulcer became epithelialized. It is important to distinguish arteriovenous malformations from venous leg ulcer-like lesions in young patients. We recommend performing multidisciplinary treatment, including embolization, at a specialized institution at an early stage.

In the screening of biologically active constituents from woody plants, the methanol extract of leaves of
Chamaecyparis obtusa showed potent neurite outgrowth-promoting activity in neuronal PC12 cells. The ethyl acetate-soluble fraction of the methanol extract showed potent activity and was separated by means of various chromatographic methods to give the two new compounds 1 and 2, as well as 11 known lignan and sesquiterpene derivatives. The structures of the new compounds were determined to be 9-
O-acetyldihydrosesamin (1) and 9-
O-(11-hydroxyeudesman-4-yl)dihydrosesamin (2), respectively, in NMR studies including 2D-NMR experiments. Of the 13 compounds, the known compound hinokinin (5) and the new compound 2 showed potent neurite outgrowth-promoting activity in PC 12 cells.

Master-slave control is becoming increasingly popular in the development of robotic systems which can provide rehabilitation training for hemiplegic patients with a unilaterally disabled limb. However, the system structures and control strategies of existent master-slave systems are always complex. An innovative master-slave system implementing force feedback and motion tracking for a rehabilitation robot is presented in this paper. The system consists of two identical motors with a wired connection, and the two motors are located at the master and slave manipulator sites respectively. The slave motor tracks the motion of the master motor directly driven by a patient. As well, the interaction force produced at the slave site is fed back to the patient. Therefore, the impaired limb driven by the slave motor can imitate the motion of the healthy limb controlling the master motor, and the patient can regulate the control force of the healthy limb properly according to the force sensation. The force sensing and motion tracking are achieved simultaneously with neither force sensors nor sophisticated control algorithms. The system is characterized by simple structure, bidirectional controllability, energy recycling, and force feedback without a force sensor. Test experiments on a prototype were conducted, and the results appraise the advantages of the system and demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed control scheme for a rehabilitation robot.

In this study, numerical simulation has been conducted for the spray injected from a slit nozzle injector for a direct gasoline engine. The droplets in the spray were investigated by the combination of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Lagrangian Discrete Droplet Model (DDM). Droplets are atomized through the primary breakup induced by the instability of the liquid surface and secondary breakup induced by relative velocity between droplet and surrounding gas. This paper applies three secondary breakup models to an injector spray flow and evaluates their results compared with experimental data.

Gemcitabine (GEM) plus albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel, nab-PTX) combination chemotherapy, known as GN-therapy, has demonstrated efficient anti-tumor effect and statistically significant overall survival of patients with metastatic or locally advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) compared with GEM monotherapy. This regimen was approved in 2014 as a standard care treatment option for patients with PDAC in Japan. While severe neutropenia is a frequent adverse effect of GN-therapy, the frequency in 2nd-line use is still poorly understood. Thus, we retrospectively investigated clinical data to compare the frequency of adverse effects between 1st-line and 2nd-line use and the risk factor for sever neutropenia in PDAC patients treated with GN-therapy.
We analyzed 52 patients who received GN-therapy for advanced PDAC. The endpoint of the survey was the occurrence of neutropenia. Risk factors significantly related to severe neutropenia were identified using logistic regression analysis. Of the 52 patients studied, the mean age ± SD was 65.7 ± 9.4 years, and 32 (61.5%) were male. The frequency of severe neutropenia was not different in 1st-line (65.4%) and 2nd-line use (57.7%) (P = 0.776) and thus 2nd-line use of GN-therapy can be as safe and effective for PDAC as 1st-line use is. In the univariate and multivariate analysis, our data suggests that low level-absolute count of white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils (ANC) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) are important predictive risk factors for severe neutropenia in patients with PDAC after the first course of GN-therapy and can make chemotherapy for PDAC more relevant and individualized.

Weld shape and track precise identification is one of the key problems for automatic welding technology. In this paper, a weld track identification method based on illumination correction and center point extraction is proposed to extract welds with different shapes and non-uniform illumination. Firstly, an image pre-processing algorithm based on illumination correction is designed to eliminate the lighting influence. Secondly, an image extraction algorithm based on iterative threshold segmentation and morphological processing is proposed to obtain a continuous weld binary image. Thirdly, sub-pixel center point extraction algorithm and least-square based polynomial fitting is used to obtain the center fitting curve of welding seam. Experimental results show that the proposed method can realize accurate recognition of welding seam track under different illumination conditions effectively. The recognition error for welding seams with different typical shapes is within 4 pixels, and the average fitting error is less than 1.8 pixels. The welding seam identification and fitting method shows great application potential in the field of automatic assembling and robotic welding.
