In this work, we fabricated transparent conducting oxide (TCO) thin films on the nanopatterned glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and characterized their morphologic, crystallographic and electrical properties in order to develop the novel transparent conducting electrodes for high-performance solar cells or display. The nanopatterned glass substrates were prepared using a thermal nanoimprint technique. TCO thin films on these nanopatterned glass substrates are expected to be lower resistivity due to high crystallinity via homogenization of crystal nucleation sites along the nanopattern.

The Na0.44Mn1-xTixO2 (x=0, 0.11, 0.22, 0.33, 0.44) were prepared from Na2CO3, Mn2O3, and TiO2 via the sintering, and their electronic and ionic conductivities were investigated through a four-electrode impedance measurement. As x increased, the electronic conductivity decreased drastically from 6x10-3 Scm-1 to 2x10-5 Scm-1 at 500 K, and the ionic conductivity changed nonlinearly in the range from 2x10-6 Scm-1 to 5x10-5 Scm-1 at 500 K with a maximum at x=0.22.

The local structure of oxygen defect in scandia stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) has been investigated by Sc-45 and O-17 MAS-NMR. Powder of ScSZ with the composition of xSc2O3-1CeO2-(100-1-x)ZrO2 (x=3-20) were used. The scandium-45 MAS NMR spectrum of ScSZ consisted of a peak at about 45 ppm with a shoulder at 0-30 ppm. The intensity of shoulder was increased with increasing the amount of scandia. The oxygen-17 MAS NMR spectra were consisted of a peak at about 380 ppm with shoulders on both sides of the peak. The intensity of shoulder at high field were increased with increasing with increasing the amount of scandia.

We prepared "quasi" granular type nanocomposites consisted of magnetite nanoparticles and silica gel in a very simple way, that is, the silica gel coating of magnetite by sol-gel method. The magnetic and electric conducting properties of the obtained composite, which were formed into a bulk shape by a sintering process, were examined. All the samples with and without silica gel layer shows magnetoresistance (MR) effect. The maximum MR ration was about 4% at 10 kOe of the applied magnetic field, which was larger than that of the non-coated sample.

In this study, we report for the first time preparation of CaBaSiS
4:Eu
2+ material by an advanced chemical solution method and its fluorescent properties. The composition of the prepared compound was confirmed by SEM-EDX. The XRD pattern of CaBaSiS
4:Eu
2+ can be indexed as belonging to a monoclinic unit cell with the lattice parameters of
a = 8.37 Å,
b = 6.67 Å,
c = 6.51 Å, β = 108.2°. The emission spectrum of CaBaSiS
4:Eu
2+ has the main peak centered at 598 nm, with the corresponding excitation maximum at around 400 nm. The strongest emission intensity of the phosphor material synthesized within this work approached 96% compared to one of the best commercially available YAG:Ce
3+ phosphor.

Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Pr
3+-doped TiO
2-NbO
2.5 thin films synthesized by a sol-gel method were reported. NbO
2.5 content (x) was varied from 2.4 to 10 mol%. For x=2.4, no PL was observed. It was thought that Pr
3+ was not substituted with Ti in TiO
2 lattice structure because of the large ionic radius of Pr
3+ in comparison with Ti
4+. On the contrary, red PL of
1D
2-
3H
4 of Pr
3+ was increased with increasing NbO
2.5 content. It is presumably because NbO
2.5 rich region in TiO
2-NbO
2.5 allowed Pr
3+ ions to be doped in the lattice structure and to be excited via band-to-band excitation of TiO
2:Nb.

In order to develop new bright phosphors with long-lasting mechanoluminescence(ML), we prepared Ga-doped ZnS:Mn and investigated the effect of additional Ga ion on the mechanoluminescent properties. Intense MLs were observed in Ga-doped ZnS:Mn phosphors. The ML spectra were shifted to a longer wavelength side by adding Ga ion to ZnS:Mn phosphor, and these shifts increased with increasing the concentration of Ga ion. The shifts in ML spectra of Ga-doped ZnS:Mn phosphors are smaller than those in the photoluminescence spectra.

Refractive index and absorption coefficient of the BTG55 glasses increased with increasing melt temperature. Activation energy for refractive index change of the BTG55 glass shows that the observed difference originates from the micro-structure in the glass, such as defects

There are promising crystals for fluorescent and LISICON materials in Li2O-ZnO-GeO2 system, e.g., Li2ZnGe3O8 and Li2ZnGeO4. On the other hand, glass and glass-ceramics in this system have not been studied in detail up to now. Therefore, we investigated crystallization behavior of several glasses in Li2O-ZnO-GeO2 system, and photoluminescent (PL) properties were examined in the glass-ceramics in this system. A glass-ceramics indicated clear blue PL at room temperature.

In the authors' group, a novel recycling method of inorganic wastes has been developed, in which phase separation of glass was used to obtain SiO
2-rich glassy phase. In the recovered solids prepared from a granulated blast furnace slag, however, small amount of sulfur was confirmed. In the case of recycling as raw material of glass, it is preferable to remove sulfur from the recovered solids. However, change in the chemical states of sulfur due to the phase separation of glass has never been clarified. In this study, behavior of sulfur associated with phase separation has been examined in the ternary Na
2S-B
2O
3-SiO
2 system. After phase separation, sulfur content in SiO
2-rich phases was reduced to 1/4 compared to the homogeneous glasses, suggesting that sulfur was preferentially distributed to B
2O
3-rich glass phases.

Water resistivity of lead glass contained in CRT was examined in acid, neutral and basic conditions. The leaching model in these conditions was estimated from leached amount of each element and surface change. Because of the reduction of the use of CRT, the waste CRT glass may be disposed as landfill. In such a situation, the long-term stability of the glass should be clarified.

Glass structure of low-melting Bi
2O
3-ZnO-B
2O
3 glasses was investigated, in which the coordination numbers of B and Bi atoms were estimated by using 11B MAS NMR and X-ray diffraction techniques, respectively. For the glasses with a constant ZnO content, the average coordination numbers of B and Bi commonly decreased with increasing Bi
2O
3 content, suggesting that Bi atoms acted as NWF forming Bi-O-Bi and Bi-O-B bridges. The structural changes observed in the present glasses are similar to the case confirmed in PbO-B
2O
3 glasses.

Inorganic nanotube, Imogolite has the following functions, high surface area, adsorption and ionic
exchange. Therefore imogolite is very attractive for the application to the materials of heat pump, humidistat and so on. However, as imogolite has fibrous structure, we need to check its
bio-compatibility in vitro and in vivo before using imogolite as functional materials. Here we describe the biological safety of imogolite with cultured animal cell (osteoblast-like cell
MC3T3-E1). From the results of several biological tests for cell proliferation and differentiation, imogolite showed very safety fibrous materials and improved cell functions.

Crack-free Calcium titanate layers were fabricated by using hydrothermal-electrochemical technique on Bulk Metallic Grass (BMG) to improve their surface biocompatibility such as hydroxyapatite forming ability. Hydrothermal-electrochemical treatments were carried out potentiostatically or galvanostatically at 433 K for 2h. The fabricated CaTiO
3 layer 5 μm in thickness was composed of cubic shape crystal 1μm in size. The calcium titanate layers hardly caused peeling and cracking after scotch® tape adhesion test. This result showed the calcium titanate layers is strongly adhered to BMG surface. The fabricated CaTiO
3 layer on BMG promoted the inducing ability of bone like hydroxyapatites in simulated body fluid, indicating that the surface of the BMG were converted from bio-inert to bioactive.
