Distance running performance depends on maximal oxygen uptake and running economy (RE). It is well recognized that concurrent training, which is a combination of endurance and resistance exercise is an effective training strategy to improve running performance. Prior studies indicate that exerciseinduced muscle damage (EIMD)produces a negative effect on RE and running performance. Thus, it is possible that running performance declines if strength training using an excessive load is performed immediately before participation in a competition. The aim of this review article is to summarize the previous studies that have investigated the effects of EIMD on maximal oxygen uptake, RE, and running performance. The results show that EIMD reduced running performance. EIMD-induced deterioration of running performance appears to be affected by a decrease in RE and/or an increase in perceived exertion. Future studies should investigate the causal relationship between EIMD and changes in running performance to determine individual variations in the effects of muscle damage.
