Ninomiya reported previously that thiothiamine had a preventive effect for thiamine deficiency of a rice-bird, but a biological reexamination of thiothiamine was undertaken, since the sample used by him was suspected to contain thiamine. Both curative and preventive tests for thiamine deficiency of thiothinmine were conducted on albino rats. An administration of 10 μg per day of thiothiamine resulted in a decrease of body weight within 20 days as in thiamine deficiency, and an administration of 50 μg per day caused the maintenance of body weight. It was therefore, concluded that thiothiamine had no thiamine activity for albino rats, or if any, it was below one per cent, while it would be difficult to determine whether it was due to thiothiamine itself or to thiamine contained therein.
