The list of laboratory animals maintained in the various laboratories in Japan was based on the survayed materials made by the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences in 1960 and arranged after being extensively examined. To ensure correctness, the essential knowledge on the animals was requested to report directly to each responsible laboratory.
Animal species included in the, list are classified to several groups, i, e. mice (either imported or raised in Japan), rats, guinea pigs, rabbits and other small mammals. Birds and insects are also included. On the description, the current rules employed in the field of Genetics are followed, by the order, strain name, other names, gene, history, specified character and the name of organization which keeps it. lmported routes are described in corresponded cases. The only short informations were noted on the most of animals except mice and rats due either to poor knowledge (guinea pigs, rabbits and other small mammals) or to the fact that they were accounted as accessory ones (birds and insects) .
It should be mentioned finally that the Committee on Normenclature of Laboratory Animal Strain organized in the Japan Experimental Animals Research Association had prepared the nomenclature code of laboratory animals and undertook the survey of the laboratory animals in Japan. Therefore, it may be probable that the content of the present list is reformed to the more reasonable one in future.
