To-day physicians are confronted with a number of incurable disorders, which may develop primarily based on alterations in the genetic material, including those of either simple Mendelian inheritance or multifactorial inheritance. With respect to the basic mechanisms leading to these morbid conditions and their developmental process, however, little is known. This presentation is concerned with a series of approaches to analyzing morbidity from the viewpoint of medical genetics, which may contribute to unifying our concept of disease entity.
The presentation is divided into two parts: the first half deals with the given subject mathematico-theoretically using group or population samples to estimate the number of detrimental genes leading to various morbid conditions or less viabilities, and on the premise of the findings obtained in the first half, the latter half refers to molecular or chromosomal basis of morbidity using laboratory data.
