Psychosomatic factors influencing the occurrence, healing process and recurrence of peptic ulcers were studied. The subjects were 309 patients, 108 suffering from gastric and 201 from duodenal ulcers, respectively. The frequency of psychologically loaded persons as ascertained from the results of two questionnaires was 33.3% of the gastric and 24.9% of the duodenal ulcer patients. This was lower than that of previously reported authors and was related to the level of subjective complaints concerning the digestive organs. Furthermore, the influence of the psychological load was seen more markedly upon the healing process than upon the recurrence of this disease. As a result of interviews with 50 peptic ulcer patients, a high incidence of domestic and occupational stress, exerting a strong influence upon the occurrence and recurrence of the condition, was observed. Organ inferiority in the digestive tract, lack of the patient's own recognition of the psychosomatic relationship, the continuation of the state of tension or anxiety and excessively sup pressed emotional responsiveness were other contributory factors.
