In AC-PDPs, the priming pulse is applied to all the cells regardless of the cell operation. This means that luminance in the area displayed in black increases, lowering the dark room contrast ratio. We propose a novel driving method which cuts down the priming pulse, and we investigate the time response of luminance for various priming conditions. From the experiments, we found that the time response is slowed down especially when displaying images in a small area. Finally, we subjectively evaluate the image quality by controlling the priming conditions.

We are investigating the important physical factors involved in reproduction of high-order artistic impression in displayed images. We found that a key assessment expression “image depth” appropriately describes the high-order subjective sensation that is indispensable for displaying extra-high-quality images. Related to the depth of images, Cross modulation among R, G and B signals is the newly discovered important physical factor affecting the display quality. We confirmed from an assessment test that the cross modulation characteristic degrades the image depth. We defined the cross modulation characteristic corresponding to the faithful reproduction of images as to guarantee that the color difference would be smaller than 1. We have developed a display which satisfies the above characteristics, and we confirmed that the “image depth” is improved.
