50 inch AC-PDPs were developed by using waffle-structured barrier ribs. The ribs improve picture quality by preventing light from leaking neighboring cells. Black stripes are used to reduce external light reflection. The use of improved barrier ribs, phosphor, and new driving methods resulted in peak luminance of 560 cd/m2 and a darkroom contrast ratio of 560 : 1.

We developed a process for fabricating reflective three-layer LCD panels using a new material. The material is an LC/resist composite that has high resolution when applied to patterning LC layers by using conventional photolithographic processes. We fabricated for the first time a 2-inch matrix panel having three GH-LC layers on a substrate using this process.

A method is described for estimating the viewing angle characteristics of an LCD on the basis of the overall quality of the pictures displayed. The factors affecting picture quality change when the angle at which an LCD is observed changes. Changes in color, maximum luminance, and minimum luminance were found to have the largest effects on picture quality. Individual picture quality was subjectively evaluated after each of these factors was changed. The estimated impairments for three the factors were integrated using an impairment summation model to give the estimated overall picture quality. The observation angle corresponding to the acceptable limit of overall picture quality was found to be similar to that obtained by direct measurement. The proposed estimation method is thus effective for estimating the viewing angle characteristic. It is, though, suggested that the affects of the three factors on picture quality need to be studied in detail from the viewpoint of independence.

The two separated G 1 electrodes, the non-penetrating shape ceramic disk and so forth materialized a very small aperture G 1. We reduced the short dimension of the G 1 track shape aperture from 0.28 to 0.26 mm. In spite of using an I-cathode and a small aperture G 1, we realized drive characteristics, reliability, and productivity equivalent to those of the conventional structure. This new structure is expected to have higher potential to be improved further.

We have developed and put into practical use a cathode that operates at low temperature, sintered cathodes have never been successful, but this new one made by hot isostatic pressing (HIP), combines the advantages of both conventional oxide and dispenser cathodes. The carbonate emitter does not change during the making of cathode structure, but it does change to an oxide emitter after it is inserted into a CRT. Therefore, these cathodes made by HIP can be used in a normal production line without any additional investments in plant. HIP cathodes have an emission life of 3 A/cm
2-24, 000 hours within 5% emission degradation at 780°C.

A new electron gun has been developed for large perfectly flat color monitor tubes by redesigning the DQ-DAF (double quadrupole-dynamic astigmatism and focus) electron gun. The new electron gun features a rectangular G 1-aperture, a newly developed main lens with a large effective diameter, and a new lens system using a static quadrupole lens immediately behind the main lens. The effect of the static quadrupole lens was investigated by analyzing the spot. It was found to reduce lens magnification in the horizontal direction and enlarged it in the vertical direction. As a result, spot distortion at the screen periphery was clearly reduced due to the smaller horizontal spot size. The dynamic voltage was also reduced.
