According to circumstances, a black line is observed between solution and headspace inside of a mandarin orange can. As it dicreases commercial worth, the cause of it has been investigated.
X-ray microanalysis and electronmicroscopic observation have shown on the black line not metallic tin but steel or Fe-Sn alloy layer. From the result, the cause of blacking is thought to be in that metallic tin is dissolved rapidly.
For the sake of making clear this rapid detinning, it has been tried to measure electrochemical polarization curves and to do a test pack.
It is concluded from these experiments that the rate of detinning has been accelerated by oxygen contained in the headspace of the can and controlled by its diffusion current.
