Although many Japanese have had their hair dyed at hair salons, it has been difficult to imagine the coloration of hair colorant. In this study, color survey was conducted to investigate relationship of color names which are widely used for oxidative hair dye to colorimetric values. 141 colors of fashion hair dyes of professional-use from 10 companies was classified into 9 color groups which were Ash, Mat, Gold, Orange, Pink, Violet, Brown, Beige and Natural. Coloration of dyestuff was blue violet to violet in Ash, yellow red to blue violet in Mat, yellow in Gold, yellow red in Orange, Brown, Beige and Natural, red in Pink, and purple in Violet. Coloration after dyeing on the hair were mostly distributed in the narrow range of red to yellow red, thus it was difficult to obviously distinguish one group from the others. However, the distinction between warm colors such as Orange, Pink, Violet and Brown and cold colors such as Ash and Mat was relatively easy. Warm colors were more reddish than the coloration of undyed hair, while cool colors were more yellowish.
