Meiji Government created the Imperial Japanese Garden in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, which was the first Japanese strolling garden created outside of Japan. This garden was an “authentic” one which was planned by the government sending the best staffs and materials to demonstrate its aesthetic traditions to America. This paper introduces the process of construction and Americans' response to the first Japanese garden using the original documents from the Meiji Government, articles of American press, and diary and memoir of the visitors.
