Recent trends in the treatment of otitis media with effusion (OME) by ENT practitioners were investigated with questionnaires, and the clinical features of this disease were analyzed.
Four hundred forty three answers (39.0%) were obtained from 1136 questionnaires to ENT doctors in five prefectures of northern, middle and southern Japan.
    The following questions were asked:
    1. Do you have any problems in the treatment of OME?
    2. What is necessary for the diagnosis of OME?
    3. What therapy do you use for OME?
    4. How do you judge the cure of OME?
    5. Do you give any advice about the patient's daily lives?
    6. What is your opinion about tubal inflation therapy?
    7. What do you think about otitis media acuta in relation to OME?
    8. Is there any difference between children and adults in the incidence or features of OME?
    9. Do you have any“new technique”for treating OME? The answers were analyzed and the view points of the authors were discussed. From the author's own clinical data, the following results were obtained: 59.4% of the patients with OME were younger than 15 years of age and 40.6% were older and indicating no significant difference in the incidence of OME in children and adults despite some differences in clinical features.
