At any port throughout the world, ship owners, captains or officers have, to their exceeding embarassment, been involved in the personal injury of stevedore on ships. Notwithstanding the captain's or officer's heeding and alertness, the matter concerned has never been uprooted, partly because it happens quite unexpectedly, partly the proper and effective means of prevention is, as yet, not fully known to us. In case of the matter, a considerable amount of money for compensation, none the less, is destined to be imposed on the helpless ship owner, the doctorine of unseaworthiness being applied to. In this thesis, I should like to try to find out the cause and prevention of the matter, to induce the nature of it by making reference to the world-wide judical precedents or inquiring into any laws and regulations at different periods.
