The significance of compaction force on dividing properties of scored tablets was investigated in several tablets prepared from sieved granules in 12-16, 16-32 and 32-48 mesh incorporating either hydroxy propyl cellulose (HPC) or potato starch as binder.
The influence of compaction force on dividing properties differed in incorporated binders and in particle sizes of tableting granules.The dividing strength of scored tablets increased with the increase of compaction force and, in some tablets, reached a plateau or decreased when compaction force exceeded a specific force. There existed a specific compaction force to minimize the weight variation of divided tablets, and effect of the particle size of tableting granules on uniform division became less when tablets were prepared at the specific compaction force.

The powder and mixture for oral intestinal lavage solution (called Polyethylene glycol-electrolyte lavage solution: PEG-ELS) used for pre-treatment of endoscopy of the large intestine were prepared. The pH, buffer capacity, and viscosity were almost constant for maximum 21 days under three conditions (5°, 20°, and 30°).Any ingredients of powders and mixtures were almost stable for 21 days. Bacteria (S. aureus) proved to be hard to propagate in the mixture. The patients and physicians used the PEG-ELS evaluated the convenience, efficacy and easily of the mixture.

Fibronectin FN) eyedrops, which has been reported to facilitate healing trophic ulcer and recurrent corneal erosion, is usually prepared from 10ml volume of patient's own blood.Themethod for the preparation of this eyedrops was studied by determination of FN content.The results were as follows:
1) From 20ml volume of blood, double concentration of FN in eyedrops could be made, or a couple of eyedrops could be done at a time.
2) FN concentration in eyedrops and area under the curve (AUC) of FN fraction had a good correlation (Y=72.2X-8.7, r=0.979, p<0.01, N=22).Therefore, it was possible to estimate FN concentration in eyedrops from AUC.
3) FN was almost lost after sterilization by filtration with nitrocellulose or mixed esters of cellulose membrane.On the other hand, FN almost remained after sterilization by filtration with polyvinylidene fluoride and acetylcellulose membrane.

The influence of age and drug combination therapy on carbamazepine (CBZ) serum level-dose (L/D) ratio and valproic acid (VPA) L/D ratio was investigated in 442 pediatric patients.The CBZ or VPA L/D ratio increased linearly with the increase in the age of pediatric patients (p<0.001).Concomitant administration of antiepileptic drugs affected those L/D ratios, which were significantly reduced in patients on polypharmacy as compared to those on monopharmacy.
Therefore, routine monitoring of CBZ and VPA serum levels would be extremely useful, especially in pediatric age group and in patients required combined antiepileptic medication.

Examination for digoxin toxicity was carried out on 46 Japanese inpatients with heart failure (age: 72.2±9.0) receiving routine oral maintenance digoxin therapy.Their serum digoxin concentrations were ranged 1.5-2.0ng/ml.It was found that 29 patients have evidence of digoxin toxicity.Age, body weight, serum digoxin concentration, and renal and hepatic function were not changed between toxic and non-toxic groups.Therefore, the data indicate that if serum digoxin concentration is above 1.5ng/ml, we must attend to the evidence of digoxin toxicity in Japanese.

The usability and functionality of a new infusion kit, which is contrived to include cephalosporin antibiotics and their dissolving solutions in a single container, was surveyed by questionare to hospital nurses engaging daily in preparation of injection.
Judging from the results of the survey on the methods of preparation and administration of cephalosporin antibiotics, the kit was recognized to be applicable to almost all cases, for which drop infusion antibiotic therapy was required, from a viewpoint of its dosing form.
The kit obtained also good reputation from the nurses participated in the survey on its sterility on preparation, safety, simplicity and economy on handling, and prevention of mistakes at the time of reconstitution of antibiotics.
