There are many kinds of acupuncture-moxibustion treatments for lumbago, but I would like to present a case study concerning keiraku therapy based on pulse diagnosis.
Keiraku therapy is defined as, “Indication-directed therapy* in which the ill body is viewed wholistically in terms of the changes in ki (_??_) and ketsu (_??_), and all symptoms are taken as the emptiness and fullness of the 12 meridians, to which hosha (_??__??_) regulation is conducted using acupuncture and moxibustion techniques.”
The patient is a 63 year-old woman, unable to carry on in daily life due to acute lumbago (strained lower back). Complete recovery was effected after several treatments indicated by lungemptiness liver-fullness. “Extra meridian” moxibustion was administered as supplemental therapy.
The above is based on therapeutic concepts that are completely distinct from those of orthopedic treatment.
    * translator's note: (_??__??__??__??_) Therapy in which the method of treatment is directly and specifically indicated by the emptiness and fullness of the meridians.

Acupuncture treatment for lumbago, or other diseases accompanied with lumbago, are frequently carried out. This report demonstrates that the acupuncture therapy performed in our “Acupuncture Science” can reach a high level of treatment, with which we are able not only to relieve pain but also to recover normal movement ability and to prevent relapse of the pain, through the use of sophisticated and sensitive palpation with reasonable prescription and manipulation. The report also show that the “Heihou acupuncture” developed by the Acupuncture Science Research Group is safe and effective.

The Apparatus for Measuring the Functioning of the Meridians (AMI) was developed by myself at the Institute for Religious Psychology. This monitors the polarization which occurs at the epidermal barrier membrane against externally applied potential (DC square wave pulses applied between two skin points). It has been clarified in our research that a very rapid propagation current flows before the onset of polarization in the water-rich phase of the dermal connective tissue. Analysing further research results, the Before Polarization (BP) current in the Yin meridian was always higher than that of the Yang partner in each meridian pair. (This pairing is according to the traditional concept of Yin-Yang relationships.) This suggests that the BP current is a parameter of the meridian functioning.
From our research results it can be said that: (1) the BP current flows in the water-rich phase of the dermal connective tissue; (2) the BP current value is a parameter of the meridian functioning; and (3) the physical location of the meridians is in the water-rich phase of the dermal connective tissue.

A statistical study on effects of laser-puncture was carried out. In addition, an attempt was made to compare between the effect of acupuncture and this method. The treatments were under-taken for various chronic and acute cases with pain. In the laser-puncture treatment, two types of laser (i, e. low energy 10mW laser and 70mW sharp laser) were used. Laser-beam was given to 20-30 points which were located in painful areas, innervating nerve areas and remote areas for 40 sec for each.
In the open study, 10mW laser-puncture was effective (including ‘rather effective’) in 64% of the cases, and 70mW laser-puncture 73%. In the blind test, ‘the day’ evaluation showed that the laser-punctures were more effective than placebo treatment: 10mW laser-puncture was effective in 80% of the cases, and placebo in 67%. 70mW laser-puncture was effective in 87% of them, and placebo in 80%. In situ acupuncture was effective in 97%, and no effect was seen in 7%.
Only ‘the day’ evaluation in the open study showed that 70mW laser-puncture was more effective than 10mW one. In the blind best, 10mW and 70mW laser-puncture were more effective than placebo, and in situ acupuncture was more effective than the laser-punctures, but there were no significant differences among the three treatmets.
