Acupuncture and moxibustion were introduced to Japan from China and handed down for 1400 years by acupuncturists. On looking over back the last 100 years, these therapies, while undergoing constant improvemnet by practioners, have both found acceptance by the general population and contributed to public health and hygiene.
Among the problems of acupuncture and acupuncturists, the following points are urgent now: a) Actual proof of the clinical effect. b) Discrimination of indication. c) Reformation of education. d) Revision of the health insurance system.
Actual proof of effects of acupuncture is significant for the existence of the techniques. The discrimination of indication is important issue for acupuncturists so as not to employ the techniques for wrong cases. This must be quickly done as the chief subject of our society. The reformation of the education system for acupuncturists means adequate training of therapists and sending out qualified technicians who can answer the requests of patients. The acupuncturists society with cooperation of JSA must take the initiative in finding a quick solution to this problem. The revision of the medical insurance system means the establishment of a new system under which people can easily receive acupuncture treatment. This is, however, not a problom for the JSA but for the acupuncturists society to solve. Therefore, the insurance problem is not to be discussed in this symposium.

Temporomandibular arthrosis, which is accompanied by pain in the jaw joint and surrounding tissue, as well as clicking and disorder of jaw opening or movement, is common in dentistry field. However current treatment often does not result in improvement. We carried out acupuncture treatment for temporomandibular arthrosis without organic disorders including psychogenic ones. 12 patients (one male and 11jfemales) referred from the department of dentistry and oral surgery of our hospital underwent acupuncture treatment once or twice a week. In each treatment, electro-acupuncture was performed for fifteen minutes through chinese needles applied to Fuchi, Eifu, Anmin, Kensei, Taiyo, Gekan, Kyosha, Ten-yo, Kensei and Gokoku. Remarkable results were obtaied in 4 of these cases, effective in 2 cases, rather-effective in 3, and non-effectiveI in 3 cases, a 75% effectivectiveness ratio.

Acupuncture-moxibustion treatment was undertaken on two patients (a 34-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman) who were diagnosed as allergic rhinitis in an otorhinological department. The patients underwent the treatment once a week, in which direct-or scarless-moxibustion (15 pieces) was applied to Tachui (GV14) and acupuncture for whole body adjustment. The subjective symptoms, eosinophil in pituita and the results of other blood examinations were compared with those of their first visits. The eosinophiles in the pituita disappeared and those in the blood fell to the average level. Although there are individual differences, a certain prolonging effect was seen in the follow-up data.

Medern methods for cancer treatment, such as calcinostatics, operation, radiation, etc. are so intensive that they cause strong negative side effects. In some cases results might be bad because of weakness from side effects and metastases of tumors. I have been studying this point for years. This is the report of an attempt at treating patients with cancer using natural methods of eastern medicine such as antiphlogosis, hemostasis, gelotripsy (resolution of gelosis), improvement of anemic condition and that of constitution.

Effects of acupuncture were studied using various measurements on a case of PSS (Progressive Systemic Sclerosis) in which symptoms had not been improved by chemo-therapy nor rehabilitation. Acupuncture was undertaken in a therapy room with constant temperature and humidity. The measurements were done before and after the weekly treatment. Although skin temperature and the contact area of the hand showed significant changes, no obvious improvement was seen in systemic symptoms such as bowel movements. Point selection and measurements employed here differ from those of Maeda et al., there remain many questions including duration and mechanism. Since no other methods have been clinically established as effective for treating this disease, acupuncture should be considered.

The authors conducted neurometory of 78 so-called healthy adults throughout the year. Electrical skin resistance (amperage) was measured at the representative measurement points of the ryodoraku. In order to clarify how this resistance changes with months and which ryodoraku is related to the comparison of month groups, the results were analized using discriminatory analysis which is one technique of multivariate data analysis. The primary discriminant function explained the fluctuation of 63.7%, and is related to the ratio of H4 and H6 to F4. The secondary discriminant function explained the fluctuation of 20.2%, and is related to the ratioI of F2 and F4 to H2. In the second-dimensional distribution, the cold season group (April, November, December, January) was against the warmIseason group (June, July, September), and intermediate season group (May, October). However, April wasjrather specific, that is, apart from the other cold seasons. Further observations must be done with regard to seasonal fluctuation.

Previously we reported that acupuncture to the stellate ganglion stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system as well as the sympathetic nervous system. We measured effects of laser acupuncture to the stellate ganglion (SGL) or electrical acupuncture to the same (SGA) on R-R intervals, deep tissue temperature and blood presure by using 45 patients; 12 in SGL-group and 33 in SGA-group.
Results are as follows; (1) Means of heart rate (HR) decreased with 2bpm in the SGL-group, 3bpm in the SGA-group. (2) Coefficient of variation (CV) of R-R intervals increased with 1% in the SGA-group only. (3) Deep tissue temperature of the ipsilateral anterior forearm of the stimulation did not increase significantly after SGA, while deep tissue temperature increased with 0.3-0.5°C after SGL. Deep tissue temperature of the contralateral anterior forearm showed no significant change in the both groups. (4) Systolic blood pressure increased with 2-4mmHg after SGA and 4-5mmHg after SGL, respectively.
It is suggested that SGL increases deep tissue temperature by affecting autonomic nervous system, but not directly.

Effect on the recovery of grasping power depending on the inserting direction of acupuncture was studied on 16 healthy person whose grasping power has weakened by continuous grasp of dynamometer.
    1) As grasping power was not remarkably diminished by cross-insertion in comparison with non-treatment, the fromer method was considered to be far more effective than the latter in recovering the grasping power.
    2) Cross-insertion was more effective than parallel-insertion in recovering the grasping power after checked injthe same method.
    3) There was no rewarkable difference between non-treatment and parallel-insertion in the recovery of the grasping power.
Conclusion: The inserting direction of acupuncture has an important role in the effect of recovering the grasping power.

In order to observe how Hachiko changes according to diseases or Sho, the adequacy of the eight parts of the body was examined in the 2200 cases who visited the Institute for Oriental Medicine in Nagoya. The Hachiko consisted of the eight parts of the human body divided into up and down, right and left, and front and back according to Yin-Yang dualism. Electrical skin resistance was measured at the terminal points using a Motoyama's measuring apparatus for the function of the meridians and the organs. Sho was determined by the diagnosis of oriental medicine. The skin resistance was applied to each of the eight parts and each average ratio of the 2200 cases was determined. The results showed the well-balanced distribution of each part's average ratio of the 2200 cases. Corresponding to the Yin-Yang theory, in which a well-balanced Yin-Yang condition is regarded as a normal physiological state, these results suggested the adequacy and importance of the Yin-Yang theory.

According to a newspaper published in 1984, more than 7% of men and women above 40 years of age living in Ohta-ku were suffering from so-called rheumatic diseases.
Therefore, accurate diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is only 1/10 of these diseases, is most important when the effect of a certain treatment of RA is estimated. In my opinion, most of the treatments including even new anti-rheumatic drugs do not change the natural course of joint destruction in RA, so we have only procedures of managing RA patients.
Conservative treatment of RA consists of not only effective administration of anti-inflammatory drugs, but also prevention of deformity and contracture of extremities.
Rehabilitation programs to prevent the deformity and contracture were shown in each joint of RA patients.
Although psychological relief of pain may be used effectively in oriental medicine, the fundamental way of managing RA must not be forgotten.
