It is needless to say that the characters of stiff foundation depend upon the original state in which the foundation was flexible. Hereupon, in order to solve the problems concerning bad foundation, the writer studied the flexible soils that (deposited in fresh water lakes called by the names of Shinji, Jinjai and Hii-Reservoir.
As the results of this experimental study concerning the grain size, consistency, the next conclusions were obtained.
    1) The deposits envifonments have influence on distribution pattern of soil particles at bottom of the lake.
    2) Small alteration in hydro nature has seldom influence on consistency of soils. But organic matters which the deposits contain are subjected to the influence of it. For this reason, activities of recent deposits give unusual values in comparision with stiff Alluvium and Diluvium.

Since 1960, several tunnels were excavated through the Rokko mountain area which is chiefly composed of granitic rocks. The routes of these tunnels are shown in Fig. 1.
The geology and the occurrence of groundwater along each tunnels are shown in Fig. 2-5. So close relations were observed between the fault zones and the fountain of groundwaters, that the groundwater of this area is defined as fissurewater along the fault zone.
The results of chemical analyses of the groundwaters and the surfacewaters in this area are shown in Table 1.2., and water qualities are also summarized in Fig. 6-9. Judging from these results, it is clear that the groundwater is chracterized by heigher alkalinity, heigher pH and being rich in F content than the surfacewater. But, on the other hand, the former is lower in hardness.
No special abnormality of the water quality is recognized in the annual variation diagram (Fig. 10) which were measured at the Rokko tunnel from Apri1, 1967 to Februay, 1970.

The route for SANYO SHIN KANSEN (New Sanyo Line) between Okayama and Hakata was selected as to connect every significant cities along the line with straight lines and as aconsequence it includes many tunnels amounting to 218km of the total distance of 400km. According an outline of the project for construction is described laying emphasis on geological problems relating to tunnel construction.
