Anti-inflammatory effects of an ear cleaner including 4.0ppm avenanthramide derived from oats for otitis externa in dogs with atopic dermatitis (AD) were evaluated. First, UV-induced skin erythema in human was treated with avenanthramide. Skin color change was measured with a chromameter. At 24 hours post-treatment, more than 3.0ppm avenanthramide reduced erythema constantly and significantly. Secondly, otitis externa in 7 dogs with AD was treated with the ear cleaner for 1 to 2 weeks. Pruritus, erythema, lichenification, and ear wax were improved in 67%, 42%, 50%, and 50% of the sites, respectively. Apparent clinical improvement was recognized in 75% of the sites. Based on these findings, it is indicated that the ear cleaner including avenanthramide proved to be effective for otitis externa in dogs with AD.
