Bean yellows caused by the Y strain of soybean dwarf virus (SDV-Y) is transmi-tted only by the the foxglove aphid,
Amlacorthum solani K. The period of infection of SDV-Y in kidney beans had been located in commercial orchards in the Tokachi district from 1985 to 1987. The period was determined using the two ways that the cultivated kidney beans were covered with a cheesecloth, the covering period was changed and the covering, interval was varied. The greatest period of infection was concentrated in the three weeks from the middle of June to early July, with some infection occurring in the middle to the end of July. The foxglove aphid cannot be grown in kidney beans. The period of infection indicates the period of migration of alate viviparae, and the degree of damage indicates the quantity of migration of alate viviparae.

The two viruses were purified from necrotic mosaic leaves of broad bean collected in Miyagi Prefecture. Both particles were flexuous rods, approximately 750nm long. The estimated molecular weights of-capsid proteins of MB-3 and MB-4 isolates were 34 kdaltons and 31 kdaltons on S DS-PAGE, respectively. Both isolates were serologically related to a necrotic strain of bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV-N).

Recently, broad bean (Uchikoshi-Issun) has been extensively cultivated as one of the special products on vegetable crop. As the plants are grown from spring to early summer in Tohoku district, they are threatend by several kinds of viruses such as bean yellow mosaic virus, cucuber mosaic virus, clover yellows virus and soybean dwarf virus transmitted by aphids. In the present experiment, the effect of mulching with polyethylene plastic film was tested to control virus-infection. Mulchtreatment with white plastic film (opposite side is balck) and silver plastic film significantly repelled aphids flighting to broad bean. The occurrence of virus diseases was not detectable in plot mulched with white plastic film and was rare in plot mulched with silver plastic film. On the contrary, winged aphids flying to non-mulched plot and plot treated with silver tape were frequently observed, and the occurrence of virus diseases increased there. Mulched plot with white plastic film or silver plastic film gave the highest yield of pods, and more pods containing 3 seeds were produced in plot mulched with white plastic film.

The alate form rate of the foxglove aphid,
Aulacorthum solani Kaltenbach, varied in the Tokachi district as follows:(1) From mid-May to mid-June, the alate form rate of first and second instar nymphs, which were collected from the some species of dock (
Rumex spp.) in the field, was high. With the apterous viviparae which were third instar to adults collected in the field, the alate form rate of the progeny of the individuals which produced the alatae was high.(2) From mid-June to mid-July, the alate form rate of the young instar nymphs decreased gradually, and the alate form rate in the progeny of the apterous viviparae which produced the alatae was low.(3) From mid-July to mid-August, the alate viviparae scarcely appeared from the young instar nymphs in the field, and the alate viviparae did not appear in the progeny of the apterous viviparae.(4) From mid-September to mid-October, the alatae which appeared were all male.

Cross-reaction tests with cornicle droplets as the pheromone source were conducted using the five species:
Aulacorthum solani Kaltenbach,
Myzus persicae Sulzer,
Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas,
Aphis rumicis Linné, Aphis craccivora Koch. The degree of response was estimated using the index of dispersion of the clusters, which were mainly composed of adults apterous virginopara or old nymphs.
A. solani and A. craccivora were highly responsive to the cornicle droplets from the other species.
M. persicae was little responsive to the droplets from the other species, and the degree of response to droplets from the same species was low. The cornicle secretion of
M. persicae elicited excellent alarm response from the other aphid species, but the cornicle secretion from the other species responded differently to each species. Other observations in these tests include:
A. solani began to respond at a constant 10-15 sec following exposure to cornicle droplets from the conspecies, and responded violently at 35-45 sec after exposure. The interval until response of
A. solani to the secretion from other species varied, being 10-15 sec for
M. euphorbiae and 4-5 sec for
M. persicae.

The life-cycles of three species of
Rhopalosiphum commonly occurring in Hokkaido were surveyed, especially on their primary host. Though they have different species of winter host trees, i. e.
Prunus (Pad us) for
padi (L.), Sorb us,
Malus and
Crataegus for
insertum (Walker), and
Prunus (Prunophora) and
Malus for
rufiabdominale (Sasaki), seasonal occurrence of the morphs was similar in three species. Grown fundatrices were seen in May. Emigrants and apterous fundatrigeniae were observed in June, though in
rufiabdorninale continued to occur even in July. The apterous fundatrigeniae of
insertum were rarely found as said in Europe. Gynoparae may emerge in later half of September, and were observed on trees in October. Males and oviparae were also seen in October.

During the annual life cycle, the cotton aphid parasitizes more than one host plant in Fukushima Prefecture. Starting from
Veronica persica, cotton aphids migrate to potato, then to cucumber and complete its cycle returning to
Veronica persica. Transferring aphid from one host plants to others was done under the laboratory conditions, and their insecticide susceptibility was tested. Judging from the results, no noticeable change of the insecticide sensibility (LC
50, LC
95) of aphids on different host plants was recognized. The cotton aphid in Fukushima has highinsecticide susceptibility. High and low insecticids susceptible clones were selected from a population on
Veronica persica. The clone which was transferred to potato showed low mortality rate, but that transferred to cucumber showed high. This tendency was almost the same in both high and low susceptible clones.

From June 28th to November 8th, 1990, seasonal prevalence of the silver Y moth was investigated every week in a cabbage field at Hitsuji-ga-oka, Sapporo. Collected individuals were reared in the laboratory at a uncontrolled room temperature. They were identified after eclosion to adults. Plusiinae species found were only two, i.e.
Autographa gamma and
A. nigrisigna. The number of individuals of the latter was relatively large in early season, and the former in late season.

Field trials were conducted at Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture in 1989-90 to evaluate the effectiveness of
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) formulations and insect growth regulators (IGRs) against diamondback moth (DBM)[
Plutella xylostella (L)] on cabbage. Results revealed that both Bt formulations and IGRs were very effective at reducing DBM populations, and that efficacy of two I G R s, chlorfluazuron and teflubenzuron, was superior to four Bt formulations, Toarow CT, Dipel, Thuricide and Bacilex. A DBM strain collected at Kuroishi in 1990 was tested for susceptibility to those insecticides using leaf-dipping bioassay with third instar larvae. LC
50 values obtained were 13.8 ppm for Dipel and 6.0 ppm for Thuricide. Although LC values of the other insecticides tested could not be calculated, the IGRs were estimated to be higher toxic than the Bt formulations.
