The biological soil disinfestation(BSD)and the use of three soil fumigants and metalaxyl granule against Phytophthora rot of strawberry caused by Phytophthora cactorum were evaluated in terms of their control effectiveness, during the period of 2003-2008 in the field. The three soil fumigants were also evaluated of their effective duration against the pathogen. BSD was highly effective with protective values of 90, 98 and 99 in 2003, 2004 and 2007, respectively. However, in 2006, the method was observed to be not effective owing to the low temperature and lack of sunshine during the treatment period. The three soil fumigants, i.e., dazomet granule, tape formulation of chloropicrin and methyl-isothiocyanate・1, 3-dichloropropene oil solution, were effective with protective values of 65-74, 63-90 and 81-97, respectively. These three soil fumigants remained effective 2 cropping seasons after treatment. The application of metalaxyl granule before planting showed no control effectiveness.

The effects of soil application of 8 granular insecticides against the foxglove aphid Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach)on soybean, potato, and chinese yam were examined from 2007 to 2009. Regardless of the test crop, nitenpyram and thiamethoxam among neonicotinoid insecticides were effective in reducing the number of the insect, but dinotefuran, acetamiprid, clothianidin and imidacloprid were less effective than the above two insecticides. On the other hand, ethylthiomethone in organophosphate insecticides was effective on the reduction in the number of this species, but the effect of acephate varied according to the year. All of the 6 neonicotinoid insecticides were highly effective in controlling the cotton aphid Aphis gossypii Glover on chinese yam; however, none of the organophosphate insecticides showed high effectiveness.

Pure pollen of tea Camellia sinensis is known to be an excellent food for the production of offspring by adult thrips but is difficult to obtain. Therefore, the effect of commercially available bee pollen of C. sinensis or C. japonica on reproductive performance was compared with that of pure pollen of C. sinensis in Frankliniella occidentalis. The number of eggs deposited by females differed significantly among the three types of food: the bee pollen of C. japonica was less effective than the others, whereas the bee pollen of C. sinensis was comparable to the pure pollen. No significant difference was observed in hatchability or adult emergence rate among the pollen types. These results suggest that the bee pollen of C. sinensis can be used as food for the efficient rearing of F. occidentalis.

The effect of cold treatment(0℃)on the survival of Carposina sasakii larvae in apples was examined to develop an efficient method of killing the larvae for quarantine control. Younger larvae were more susceptible to low temperature and complete mortality was achieved with a relatively short duration of cold treatment. At the same physiological age, larvae that developed earlier in the season were killed within a shorter duration of cold treatment, suggesting that the effect of cold treatment was also influenced by the environmental conditions during larval development prior to cold treatment. These results indicate that the time required for complete mortality varies with cultivar-dependent harvest time of apples.
